This looks like it only works from iPhones or w/Apple. What about storage for an actual; camera?

The device is about the size of a deck of cards- a little bigger.

I had solid state drive I put in a 10.00 container, hooked together with a cable. Could probably Velcro them together. All together far lighter, smaller, less expensive if stolen, etc than a laptop.

One can Wi-Fi from the device to an iPad. I suspect it would work with other similar devices. Didn’t try as I only have an iPad. On one YouTube demo, a guy watched movies from the hardrive. I am surprised this worked without buffering issues.

On the iPad you can scan the sd card when in the device. Or download ( my main goal) to the usb drive and scan the drive to review pictures with the iPad.

Device is not lightening fast but could backup 650 raw photos and 650 jpegs in about 5-7 minutes I estimate. Didn’t really time it

I am always concerned about the camera with a card in it getting stolen and hence desire to have a backup. And, I found life to be easier when I could see photos on an iPad sized screen. Looking at the image on a camera is suboptimal, in my opinion, if one has another choice.

Can use device to charge another device although less useful as the gadget stayed in the hotel and I was out and about.

Anyway, works for me. Just sharing my recent experience

That's what I missed, spent all my (3 minute) effort concentrating on cell phone types, not if it worked for cell phones, not Canons, etc.

This device looks simple and useful - essentially a kind of external HD. A side slot is for SD card. Is it simple to download/backup files from it, JPEG and/or RAW? It would be great for travel.

It does but you must provide the hardrive. It acts as the intermediary, like a computer would for copying files from a drive (SD card) to another drive ( user supplied usb drive )

I posted a few weeks ago re: this issue.

My experience, after 10 days out of the US, is that the New Q device works well to backup photos to a light solid state USB drive.

It also allows one to create a Wi-Fi network between the New Q device and an iPad (or similar I presume). This was my other goal, to review photos on a larger than a camera screen. That worked pretty well also if a JPEG.

I had no time nor interest in editing at nite.

Happy not to have to deal with a laptop. Internet not required. Pretty inexpensive. Light. Simple. Can be used as a battery to charge other devices.

Does other stuff too that I did not need nor explore.

Just my 2c based on my experience.

Some folks claim this one works but that it isn't speedy,

Somewhere around the studio, I have a battery/AC powered travel router bought from Newegg 10 years ago. Has 802.11 wi-fi & RJ-45, and a bit larger than a deck of cards. I tried the wireless a few times in the living room and it worked, but with a Cat5 cable it tested at 20 megabits. Used it only to back my camera cards in the field via the built in USB 2.0 hub to SSD drive with a battery bank plugged in, just so the built in battery never ran out. It reads/writes on the SSD drive just as fast as the notebook PC I used to lug around. The built in SD card backup slot is very slow given it's age, compared to using the USB hub connection to SSD, that all fit in the back compartment of my camera bag. I charged it just before Christmas 2022, misplaced it but it will turn up. I believe Motorola manufactured them briefly. Never lost a file, very dependable and sure beats packing the old notebook around. Highly recommended if you get a newer unit.

'HooToo' brand still makes a similar unit that a friend has, he's on his 2nd one. There are several other brands of these though not through Amazon. Cheers:)

For 1,000 raw images, you'd need a lot of storage space.

True…but most people that have talked about this method here and elsewhere on other forums (fora maybe) are mostly copying from the camera or card reader to the iPad/iPhone, then copying again to an external SSD and deleting them from the iPad if necessary, then rinse and repeat for the other card or tomorrow or whatever. I generally carry a laptop for this but if I was on a trip where I would be walking a whole lot, taking public transport, buses, trains, etc where weight was an issue…I would at least consider and probably would do it with an iPad instead…but luckily we're well enough that we would just rent a car and drive rather than take public transport…although trains would be acceptable depending on what we were doing and how long we were staying in a city/town. There's also the option of just carrying a pile of memory cards which are even lighter and just stick the full ones in the bag…if I were to take that route I would probably shift from overflow to backup for the second card and carry/store them separately just in case…but again that would only be worth considering for a weight conscious trip.

This link shows the SSK device looks very good that suits travel without carrying laptop option. Does anyone have experience with it ?

This won’t work. You need a device that can send a prompt to the camera to download the photos.

But you only need to insert the SD card in the device slot and it will work?

Did you ever hear that you can't have it both ways!!

I shoot both also. Adding the JPEG ONLY Takes minimal more space and I can use them to instantly print them to show. To be specific I take photos on our many fishing trips, after the trip and before dinner I'll print out a bunch of 4x6 prints to pass out and have them take home to brag about their big catch. I have the raw files to post process when time allows.

This is the one device I was referring to, I think just plug in your SD and download.

I have the NewQ device that has been referenced from Amazon. I did not purchase it to use with my iPhone. It appears to work like those photo stick memory devices and actually removes the photos from your phone to place them on this hard drive (or SSD?). I have not used it bc I’m not going to trust an unproven device to take years of irreplaceable memories off my phone and perhaps loose them in the transfer or 6 months later. I wanted a true back up (ie making a 2nd copy of my photos) device. I wanted a true backup of photos on a one SD card camera while traveling. Instead the goal of this is to move them off your phone to free up space for more. I’d rather continue to use i’Cloud for a second copy. Had too many little drives go bad.

The new Q devices copies from the camera to a hard drive ( I used a SSD drive in an enclosure) attached to the New Q device

Does not remove anything. Hence it creates a backup. Could probably copy to another SD card but did not explore this as an option

No different than copying files from your camera to a pc.
