Alaska 2023

I just returned from a fabulous cruise to Alaska with my entire family - we celebrated our 80th birthdays and 58th wedding anniversary. It really was a great time and I will have a number of photos to share with the Hogs. But first I have to show what i believe - after seeing it first hand - is a shocking picture of what we are doing to this wonderful planet and how I really worry about the climate that we are leaving our grand children.
This was my second trip to Alaska and we were fortunate to see the Mendenhall Glacier on both cruises and while not exactly from the same perspective, pretty close. So the two attached photos show the front edge of the glacier as seen in September 2005 and as seen last week August 2023. in 2005 the leading edge was a solid mass as seen by the dirt lines running across the edge. Back from the water line the glacier was quite hilly but never the less a solid continuous "slab of ice" . I later flew over it in a sea plane but did not take any pictures - Too busy holding on.
Today the glacier is formed by chunks of ice clearly indicating that the break up occurs well back from the water's edge Today the Glacier is not a slab of ice moving toward the water, but rather a flow of chunks heading toward the water.
Please don't judge the photos for the photographic quality but rather for what they show about our environment and rapidity the of change and impact. Last week's view was at about 7AM and I was shooting through quite a bit of morning haze and fog so the editing was a bit more severe than what i like
