For the type of shooting you suggest, I think you should be fine but if you have a camera store close by, go try and touch, feel and see what you are buying. If possible, rent an outfit before you make the switch.

Look at a Sony. If you really want light weight, seriously consider one from the 6000 series. They have bells and whistles and take excellent photos.

Why not rent a camera you are considering from LensRentals.com and post what you find in Ugly Hedgehog ?

I expeced comments all over the map. Fact is, two retailers said that mirrorless is the only way to go; DLSR is dead and no more updates or models, including lenses. Any other ideas ? For the comment about the D500 being so much better, I opted for less weight. 15X less.

You do know retailers are in business to sell cameras, don't you? Of course they are going to tell you mirrorless is the way to go. What else would a retailer tell a prospective customer interested in a new camera?

I am having a problem with your math of the mirrorless camera being 15X less weight. Is that to be read as 15 Times less weight? If so then would not the mirrorless camera be completely weightless? Now that is some trick in my book. Congratulations.

It's rarely even a -10% difference when using the same sensor size and just removing the mirror, when considering the combined weight of the lens and body, and possibly a mount adapter. As one of our smartest UHH community members noted earlier, you have to change to a smaller sensor size, or give up on interchangeable lens designs, to really achieve a significant size and weight difference.

Opinion response/different perspective: For those with the money to support wholesale change from DSLR to MILC - I see no real issues...and maybe photo happiness for most users,.... or just adding a MILC to your collection, no issue either.

One solution mentioned - the all-in-one larger sensor integrated zoom style camera has merit, if it truly fits your needs.

Now for the caveat: This is more for the mix and match crowd, budget limited photographers, those with a physical limitation or consideration, etc. - I use both DSLR and MILC bodies (Canon/Nikon/Sony) with a bad left shoulder/rotator and some nerve damage to left arm - I find the smaller/lighter MILC bodies to be fine when used with smaller MILC lenses: That said, I find them a PITA when using larger lenses like my collection of older big long zooms 50/150/170/200 - to 500/600 MM models - especially/severely "unbalanced" in a word.... For tripod/monopod use not much of a deal, but handheld do find myself doing work-arounds to handle the "unbalanced combos". When using the larger longer lenses (for me) the larger DSLR bodies really balance the combo. DSLR lenses with adapters for MILC - won't go there for this discussion - they make the combos even longer and even heavier, negate the reason for going smaller/lighter.

For folks with larger hands, the smaller MILC form-factor can be a problem, so look carefully at button/control placement - it might/might not be an issue for you.

Over time I'll most likely sell-off most of my big ole lenses and slim down my gear, as I'm not out in the field as much. As a life long photog (hobby only now), I do not see a need for the latest and greatest to get fine photo results. Your needs may/will be different, so you pick and choose what suits your style, and you go with it.

The mention of trying before buying is the best idea brought to the table - that will tell the OP the answers to his/her question of MILC vs DSLR, and true functionality.....
again, just my $.02

What kind of photography do you do? What are the two full frame zoom lenses you use? You might also consider a "mega zoom" type camera with built in lens, like the Sony RX 100 (m7 or other depending on your budget and needs) or the Sony RX10 m IV or a micro 4/3 camera (ie. OM systems). There are lots of choices these days and most will work well for different photographs though some are better for others.

I have the SONY RX100 VII with it 24-200 lens.
A fantastic small camera that I have taken all over the world.

As always, I recommend reading reviews and comparisons. A Nikon mirrorless is not going to make much of a difference in terms of size and weight. Look for a compact with a good zoom range - not interchangeable lenses.

Best compact -

I sensed there's a hole in your self-confidence that you're trying to hide behind a mirror, guess I found it.

I am selling my Nikon D500 that has two full frame zoom lenses to get a Zfc or Z50 with zoom lens. The D500 has served me well, and the quality of images has been terrific, but I want lighter and smaller for travel. For cruise ships and other travel it has become too much trouble to lug around at my advancing age. Landscape and dinner parites are my major uses. My question is ..... am I compromising quality ? Are there other compact mirrorless bodies that I should consider ? Comments welcome. Thanks.
I am selling my Nikon D500 that has two full frame... (show quote)

As mentioned, the ZFC/Z50 will give the same or better IQ - assuming the same vintage/quality lens - but you will still have the same size/weight multiple lenses. The overall weight/size saving will be miniscule !

If you are not making/selling large prints or working for NatGeo, are not married to Nikon, and are SERIOUS about convenience, then the Sony RX10/100 series is what you should be looking at. IQ will still be at a HIGH level.
