If you don’t need a viewfinder how about the Sony RX100 current model?

Sorry. I had a brain freeze. I had been looking at two models and got them confused. The Sony RX100 does in fact had a viewfinder but is a little pricey. What I meant to say is the Canon - PowerShot G7 X Mark III. Which definitely does not have a viewfinder. The G5 X does but it has been out of stock for months.

Sorry for misspeaking. So in any case the Canon - PowerShot G7 X Mark III is a possibility if you don't need a viewfinder.

Thank you all for your advice, more research to do on these models now and a trip to the shop to try some of them out. Not one for buying blind off the internet before handling them to see how they feel and operate. Never bought a refurbished camera how do you feel about buying second hand?

I have some memory that there is a reasonably good camera store in Manchester so I wonder if it would be worth going there so you can see and hold various cameras and ask questions. They may also know of other models than the ones they carry that would meet your needs and that you could order. They can also give you firm prices.

BTW, my father grew up in Machynlleth so I've been to North Wales many times. Amazing place to shoot!

second hand cameras are fine if you buy from a respected dealer like B&H or KEH

Looking to buy a new camera, can't decide between bridge or compact. Looking for a good zoom lens, not too complicated to use, not fussed about wifi or touchscreen just one that takes great shots. Budget is up to £800.
Already have a Canon 4000D DSLR and a Panasonic Lumix TZ70 that I have had for ages and loved the picture quality and zoom but is now starting to have problems so wanting one to upgrade from this that I don't have to faff about changing lenses but gives me all theup to date features of a great camera. Most of the time my DSLR is gathering dust as it's too bulky to carry everything around.

I bought a Lumix point and shoot ZS 200 ( TZ 200 in UK?) recently for a cruise down the Rhine last month. You might check it.

You should investigate MPB to buy used. They offer a 6 month warrantee, and they do stand behind what they sell you.

I always have mixed feelings about buying used and refurbished, that being said. I have had zero issues with my used camera bodies and refurbished bodies that I have bought over the years. I have bought from my local camera store that lets you return it in 30 days if there are any issues. And I have bought used from people selling their used camera/lenses. And I have done refurbished from Canon.com.

To reiterate..... Both the Sony RX-10 series, and the RX100 series have viewfinders and a "1"" sensor, and Zeiss lenses. The difference is that the RX-10 series is a large camera and the RX100 series is a pocket sized camera. If you want the highest optical product, the RX-10 with larger glass will probably be best for you. If you want portability, the RX100 series with the pop-up viewfinder is a fantastic product. I have owned both.

The RX100 VI or VII are the choice to get and they are cheaper than the RX10 IV. The RX10 III is a bit cheaper used but the AF not as good for moving subjects.

I have both the RX10m4 and Rx100vi and both are excellent cameras. If you're intimidated by their settings just use auto in the beginning and go from there. Zeiss glass on both.

While the Sony RX100 M7 is a great camera with a viewfinder and a 24-200mm (eq.) zoom, it’s also above your stated budget at $1300.00 USD, although you may find one used for a bit less than that. You stated you like your Panasonic Lumix TZ70. Why not consider the newer TZ-80? For a good bridge camera with a moderate zoom range, the Panasonic Lumix FZ80 II is a good choice. It zooms out to 400mm eq. range. It also has a 1” type sensor. Going back to Sony, the first RX100 models only zoom to 70mm eq., and have no viewfinder. Versions 3, 4 and 5 do, but only zoom to 70mm. Versions 6 and 7 zoom to 200mm and have a pop up viewfinder.

EDIT:

I misstated regarding the Panasonic Lumix bridge camera. I meant the FZ1000 II, NOT the FZ80. Sorry ‘bout that.

Hard to beat the Sony RX10iv, but it might be a bit above your price limit. Perhaps a used one.

I agree with imagemeister - I walk daily and I leave my Sony a7Riii behind most days and take my Sony rx100 vi with me. Equivalent 24-200. A bird shot is attached. I saw mpb currently has nothing, but I'm sure you can probably pick one up for around your price range.

I am not aware of an FZ80 II, but the FZ80 does NOT have a 1" sensor. It is a 1/2.3" sensor.

You made me to pull out the Sony rx100 and check it for pop up viewfinder. As I knew already, it doesnt have one. It only has a pop up flash. I wonder for your conviction otherwise!!
