I just wrapped up a three-hour session that proved quite helpful to me in this matter ad I am passing on what I learned. I found that the 'store original' system has these traits:
That store system works with JPG, BMP, GIF and TIF formats. That's all I have.
Colors in the image make no difference. I went from pure white to pure black and that had no effect.
The height of the image has no effect on the system.
But - the width of the image has to be 1201 pixels wide or more.

Color
space (profile) can make a big difference. Always use sRGB for web.
"Store original" can be used with non-image files (pdf, for example). You get the download link, just not a thumbnail preview.
The pixel width relation to producing a "download" was changed by Admin/owner several years ago. Originally, your photo would display as 600 pixels wide. Now that they fill many screens, a downloadable version is primarily of use to those who like to closely examine the technical aspects - e.g. noise
Try a file that is 24MB or larger ....
Jim, I feel like I am picking up a post in mid-stream. Bing AI states it best, "I’m not sure what you mean by “photography store original information”. Could you please clarify your question?"
Paul, thank you as always
