Good Morning Hoggers,

About 2 months ago a bear demolished my bird feeder. Based upon animal control recommendations, I'm now ready to reinstall a new feeder and need a recommendation on a trail camera so I can monitor the feeder at night. I haven't felt the need for a trail camera before so I have no idea what features I need, or what the options are (color/B&W, mounting options, storage capacity, how to download images, angle of view, etc).

I would intend to mount the camera on one of the posts on my front porch and the feeder will be about 20 feet away. I've attached a couple of photos of the demolished feeder if that helps you.

I don't have one yet. Shopping at B&H suggests that Browning is the leader with Bushnell chasing them. Between the two brands, there are 42 choices! About 30 if you eliminate those with cellular connections. Price ranges from $200 to $80.

We've had bear issues also. It's so dry here in the southwest that the poor things are starving.
Our quick solution is to bring the feeders in at night. We decreased feeders from 10 to 4.
I have two trail cams and don't like the pics from either especially night pics.
However, there must be a camera adapter or attachment for motion sensing that can be attached to a better camera so as to get marketable pictures.

Bears have an extraordinary nose and strength, hard to out smart them.

There are inexpensive "security cameras" that are motion-activated. Local people post pictures and videos of animals strolling through their property at night. Amazon has lots of choices.

I have four. Two MoultrieMobile and two Reveal Tactacam. All four are cellular enabled. The Reveal versions alert me immediately via an iPhone app when a photo is taken.

I have numerous SPYPOINT on our property for security not watching animals. They send the first 100 to your phone each month. If you exceed 100 photo then the camera retains them on the memory card. They send the photos via cell tower so you have to have cell service where you place them. You can subscribe for more photos sent for a monthly charge. It is not “on demand” camera so you can’t connect to it just to watch it.

Instead of getting a Trail Cam (unless you just want one for OTHER reasons), please just take down your feeders! I've volunteered for Colorado Parks and Wildlife for 16 years on the "Bear Aware" Team and can't even tell you how many bears have been euthanized for OUR mistakes and desires! We know bears are around, yet people still leave their dog food under their decks; leave their bird/hummingbird feeders out day and night; try to compost in their yards or put their garbage cans out two days before pick-up because "we're going out of town". (Ask a neighbor to put out your garbage as close to pick-up as possible and take in the can when it's emptied.) In Colorado, it's "two strikes and you're out" for bears. The first time, they're tagged, the second time they're reported, they're euthanized. Please help keep wildlife wild and don't attract bears to your property.

Bears are getting ready to go into hyperphagia prior to hibernation and they'll start looking for 20,000 calories/day. Bird feeders and dog food are an easy target. Please Be Bear Aware! Thank you ♥

Giving my .02 worth…. I have had several trail cams over the last few years. The brands were Cabelas, Browning Moultrie plus one more. Each one costs was about 159$ with each of them worth about .01. Clarity like forget it, night time pics were no way, ate batteries for lunch and supper.
If looking for the residential camera I would invest in a security camera with an alarm. Much better and more affordable in the long run.
