How do you know Frank, have you tried it? No bath!!! That's why the towel is employed. It's worked every time for me and my compadres. It's only a recommendation...it worked perfectly for me. If the pipe is totally occluded and the towel starts getting soaked, it's time for a pro.

LOL
I did the hose thing on a 24" after digging it out just out side the building and cutting an access hole I'm the pipe we could see the clog about fifty feet down stream so we put a plug in the pipe (an air bag)to keep the water from blowing back into the boiler room, the a shove a 2" fire hose dow the pipe as far as we could and lashed it to stakes to keep it from blowing bace out then slowly open the fire hydrant we had a geyser for about twenty mins. water when it finally opened we flushed it for another half hour , removed the hose and looked down the pipe it Wes clean !!!
Then we patched a stand pipe into the hole at and angle so we could get the nozzle down the pipe. I don't know if it was ever used again
The about five years later I tried it on 4" drain using a garden hose packed rags around the hose and turned the water on, thinking the rags would hold LMAO the city water pressure was 80 psi when that hose came back out we were lucky no one got hit by it . the second try we lashed the hose down and turned the water back on !! not near as big but the geyser lasted about ten mins,

I have a 3/8 inch drill driven snake.the front tip can be changed .I also have a drain opening right outside my kitchen. Just open the plug and insert the snake and about 30 ft down the pipe is where the grease clogs it up about once a year.no water pressure can clear that grease as good as a snake.i got it at home depot for about $279 four years ago
It weighs about 30 pounds.

Reminds me of a story I heard (I was not involved and don't know if it's true, but it's certainly possible).

A woman was making soap in her kitchen. She had a large pot on the stove and when it was ready she took it over to the kitchen counter so she could ladle it into forms for making bars. The dog tripped her on the way over and the pot got dumped into the kitchen sink. The soap went into the nice cool drain and hardened there.

Victory! The water runs right down the drain! I poured a pot of hot water down the drain to clean it out.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Wow!

My mother liked telling the story about a salesman who came to the door. She said, "I can't talk now. There's something dying in the kitchen." She was dying fabric, but she didn't realize how that sounded till after he left.

The kitchen sink was draining slowly, so I began trying to clear it - slowly. Right now, I'm down to floor level with a new auger/snake I got last night. My regular augers were too wide at the end to make the sharp turns in the drainpipe. I ran about 24' of snake directly through the drainpipe. Still plugged. Putting a chemical into the pipe doesn't work because it doesn't go anywhere. I tried baking soda and vinegar, but it foams away as soon as I dump it in.

I'll try later with the snake and see if I can find a longer one.

Any suggestions will be gladly received.

We had a water backup problem last year which caused a shallow backup flood of our basement. We called our usual plumber for assistance. Long story short, the house is old with an addition and re-routed sewer lines that created confusion of the true drainage path. Ended up with digging across the entire back our house and another large hole on one side. Problem was finally found (broken old tile drainage pipe), repaired, and needing an electrician to repair the underground electric wiring to garage damaged by the digging, and a landscaper to fix the yard damage. It cost us but the wife and I are so happy I did not try to fix it myself.

I had a slow drain on our kitchen sink. long time ago I bought this drain cleaner that comes in a plastic bag. I had used it for bathroom sinks when they were slow ( from hair). Anyway I poured it down the sink and waited then after 15 minutes I poured hot water that I had been heating on the stove. That worked pretty good but just because I repeated the process one more time. The tornado of water going down is how I judge the process.
