In October of this year, I will be spending six days in Prague and then six days in Budapest. I am very excited, I have not been to either city before. I am looking for suggestions on where to go, and what places are photographically compelling. Many thanks in advance for your help.

We’ve been to both. I found the old part of Prague to be a really great place for photos, as the architecture there is wonderful. I’m sure you’ll get a tour of Prague Castle. Our guide told us Prague was the city of 500 churches. We took a side trip to the Terezin camp, a WW II prison camp.

Fishermen’s Bastion in Budapest is beautiful with a view of the city and river below. The Parliament building is gorgeous. I believe Europe’s second-largest synagogue is in Budapest.

Budapest is amazing for night photography! All along the river, fisherman's bastion, chain bridge, parliament and many others are all lit up. There is a hill where the citadel is for a great view of the city and river. You might start on the hill for sunset.

We spent a number of days in Prague and enjoyed it very much. A few suggestions:

Of course, the old part of the city is wonderful...the clocks, the bridges, etc. I recommend you watch the movie Anthropiod or minimally learn about the military operation, which is about the some Czech patriots resisting the SS, who died in a last stand at the go to the Saints Cyril and Methodius church where they perished. It is a short walk. Getting "compelling" photos there might be a challenge, but well worth the 2 hours out of your day to do.

Outside of Prague there is a church made of skeletons in Sedlic (day trips avail or a quick drive). Be prepared for low light conditions, people, etc. But it was well worth the day trip. As I recall we stopped at the Pilsner Urquell brewery which is good beer and had some significance to WW2.

Our trip was back in 2017 and I took a half day photo trip with a guy by the name of Jan Mirake. He had some rooftops and other areas I would not have known about. He liked taking loooong exposures using a tripod (which I borrowed) at various sites that would be essentially remove all people from the frame. (I am a very different photographer now from 2017. I would not want this kind of photo...rather I like long exposures but showing people moving in a frame. But to each his own. I would reach out to him if you like tours. Nice guy.)

Cant speak to Budapest...went to Krakow instead but have to go back!

Be sure to climb the 987 steps to the top of St. Vitas cathedral at Prague Castle. The views, statues, flying buttresses and cool breeze should not be missed. The Charles Street Bridge tower if open also gives great views and photos.

If you have 6 days in Prague, I would suggest a day trip to the Saxon Switzerland National Park with a stop at Kongstein Fortress. We had four, and a private driver was very affordable, but there are plenty of tours available.

Both cities are great, you should have a wonderful trip.

You're getting good advice so far. In Budapest make sure you see the Museum of Horrors and you'll understand what it's like to live under communism. Also, there's a guy who parks a Trabant along the road with a donation box attached. He wants money to restore it. You can guess the euros go to his beer fund.

In late September/early October, my wife and I are scheduled for 4 nights in Berlin, and three each in Vienna and Prague. There are so many photographic opportunities, I am sure, and I plan to take 4 lenses Z14-30, Z28-75m Z70-180 and a 12mm fisheye (must remember to bring the adaptor). This array of lenses should cover all situations.

Check out both cities on Trip Advisor. You can a listing of sites to see that would make a photographer happy. Also check out Atlas Obscura.. may have lots of important and/or abandoned sites in both cities.
Have a safe and wonderful trip.

Went to both over XMas a couple years ago. In Prague be sure to go to Old Town Square (at night!) and go to the top of the Town Hall tower. Fabulous night shots. In Budapest be sure to take a dinner cruise on thee Danube (Be sure it's dark). Plenty more great night shots. I've attached a few.
