Hi All,
I will be traveling to Ann Arbor, MI for about a week and would like to explore nature areas that are fairly close to the area. I could be up for a day trip is something is special but since I will be visiting in-laws won't have as much time as I'd like for photography. I'd love to find birds, mammals and macro subjects. My longest lens will be a 400mm.
I am not familiar with the area so I don't know if this is a good time of year or not.
Any advice or tips will be appreciated.
Thanks!
Suzanne
Nichols Arboretum near campus. There are a number of places further north in Michigan (3+ hours away), but the Arboretum in A2 is a great place with a camera.
Check out Kensington Metro Park
Kensington Metropark is not far. Also, Greenfield Village & The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak. Also, the Gilmore Car Museum near Kalamazoo. Meijer Gardens near Grand Rapids.

Thanks. I’ve already looked at TripAdvisor and other sites but was hoping for personal recommendations.
Pinckney Recreational Area, north west of AA, is probably the most extensive nature area with much water, trails. If you want something pretty interesting is Port Huron — you have St Clair River thru town and not unusual to see huge freighters, like 2-3 houses, floating right past you that you can almost reach out and touch. Then there is the bridge to Canada, over the river, and right north of that, Lake Huron takes off in it’s vast expanse of water. If you want to do an overnight, try for a room at Doubletree and see if you can get a room near the end facing the water and bridge - 3rd floor is best, like 301/2. I think the “even rooms” face the bridge have nice balcony. Very cool.
