I have run into this problem since the Film days.
The "Drugstore" processors always seem to crop 5%.
The Frame itself can take 1/4" all around.
If you Straighten the image, you may also loose corners of the image.
I have to keep reminding myself to shoot wider if printing & framing the image.

Did the print have a border?
That used to happen with most places.

I usually don't "shoot to the edge" so I haven't noticed on mine. (Not paid attention.)

A lot of photo printers crop images to fit standard aspect ratios. If your original was not a standard, expect cropping. The way to avoid that is to pad the image with a margin on the top and bottom (or left and right) to force the image into a standard aspect ratio.

Absolutely! Often printers will print pictures beyond the edges of the paper causing damage to the printer. Thus it is always wise to specify margins which then can be cut off if necessary.

I have tried to remember to leave more room on the borders as I take photos. This allows me to print satisfactory enlargements.

I'm surprised this happened with the MPIX system. When I have ordered from them, there are several steps at which you can check crops and the final image structure.

You can review your orders in the MPIX system. It would be interesting to see if the tail is cropped in the order.

What I see also has the top of the bird's reflection missing -- at the bottom edge.
On you next outing, I suggest a smaller animal -- that is, "zoom" out a little.

IMO, the printing company you choose should have forwarded you that the image size you provided to them would be clipped on the paper size you specified. If that was the case, you should have either reduced the image size you provided, or specified a larger paper size. IMO, aspect ratio has nothing to do with it. In my case, many of my images do not fit a specific common aspect ratio. I would be sure to specify to the printer the size of the paper I want the image printed on, making sure the image size I send to them fits on the paper size I have specified. Bottom line, I think a good printer would not have clipped you image. I would request the correct the error. If they won’t, find another printer.

Unless you’re paying for custom prints aspect ratio has everything wto do with it. Those systems will default to no white space, except for a normal white border if requested. Even though you can normally crop when you upload those systems will not let you crop so that either the width or that height doesn’t fill space, so that means if the aspect ratio is off the other dimension will be greater than the space and automatically cropped. When I was getting prints from Costco I would often have to add white canvas to one dimension to get the full image in the other dimension.
