lower quality products are always more expensive than the best one. Maybe you local grocery doesn't stock the cheap brands.

I wanted some grocery items, so I went to the local supermarket, 4.5 miles away, rather than to the big one 7.5 miles away. Just out of curiosity, I looked at the ice cream. Prices ranged from $7.39 to $7.99. In the big supermarket (Hannaford), I pay $2.48. The difference in the cost of gas for going to Hannaford is only $0.48, so it's worth the drive.

The supermarket near my house sells the house brand 48oz for $2.49 but I never tried it.

Your numbers are flawed as to cost of going the extra 3 miles. Your fuel costs maybe correct but you failed to include wear and tear on tires and vehicle. You also didn't include your time. I use ten dollars an hour for my time because at this point I don't move real fast. Lol. You also have to use 6 miles for the calculation because you have to get back to the original 3 miles over point. Lol

I'm not going to try to compute the wear on the tires, belts, brake pedal, and door locks. That's irrelevant. At the current prices, it cost me $0.08 in gasoline to drive a mile.

Doing a quick calculation, it cost about $0.01 per mile on the original tires. I have over 40,000 miles on my current tires.

That "6 miles" is irrelevant. From my house to one store and back is nine miles. To the other store, it fifteen miles.

Many years ago, I used to work for Southland Corporation, the parent company of 7-11. They used to say that they could charge more for the same goods that could be purchased much cheaper elsewhere because, "they were more convenient". They became very successful with that approach. Convenience, you see, is a commodity and many are willing to pay for the convenience of being close requiring less time. As to your question as to whether it's worth the drive; that can only be answered by you. Did you spend more money or did you spend the extra time and pay less? It's the consumer that makes that choice and in most cases "Convenience" wins out.

Yeah you may not see them in New York. They are the largest supermarket chain now that they just bought Albersons and Tom Thumb.

The cost of the car is more than just the gas. However, some of the costs apply even if you don't drive it at all.
