I agree with the cropping. Try recropping with thirds. The picture and pose are nice. What bothers me is that while the body is plumbed straight, the head, especially the eyes, are cocked at an angle. I would like to see what the shot looks like with the eyes plumbed horizontal leaving the body at a slight angle. I would lighten the body a wee tad so the white of the breast pops more and then darken the background a little. If you are using LR, trying boosting the clarity a bit or bumping up the contrast a little. I like the lack of any background distractions.

Thanks for posting.

Thank you for everyone's thoughts about cropping.
Here is another crop, as this was originally shot in landscape. I have too many of these type of shots of this species so thought I would try something different.
I selected the bird, brought up the whites and brought the blacks down. If I darkened the BG more than just a tad, the bird looked "cut out" on the BG. In the original shot I did desaturate the BG slightly.

I like the reverse head-over-shoulder pose. I agree with you about darkening the background too much. I like a lot of snap in shots like this. Still do not like the crop.

Nup, to the second version. I think the branch, bottom left, now brings the environment into the equation and detracts from the subject.
Everything is 'in the eye of the beholder' of course.

Absolutely agree with you. I debated cloning out that branch, but I am not sure even that would sway me away from the original portrait type crop.

The caracara is an imposing, almost intimidating bird. For me, that is communicated better in your original take.

This is a Crested Caracara, same bird I posted a few days ago. I have many images of this species taken in different locals and in different poses-both perched and in flight. For some reason this one appeals to me. Does it to you?

This image was cropped heavily as it was originally shot in landscape and cropped to portrait. Otherwise little processing was done-selectively whites brought up slightly and blacks down slightly.

I like it!
