As near as I can tell, my dad actually did that. There is a family story that my uncle paid the bank off for $10K. It was done quietly and all are dead now so I don't know for sure.

I totally agree with the notion of going to one system. I finally left Nikon after trying to maintain two completely different systems, and stayed with my Olympus m4/3 stuff.
I won't try to sell you on any particular system, but I strongly urge you to look into mirrorless. I also like having two identical bodies, with a dedicated long lens on one for wildlife, and a shorter whatever for landscapes etc. on the other.
It makes life so much simpler.

The Sony A7RV has top of the line eye-animal focus, so you would be making your life that much easier! Every time I upgrade I am amazed at how much "horsepower" the new body has. In this case, upgrading from using an A7Rlll to an A7RV will be like going from a Volkswagen to a Ferrari!

You seem to have a pretty hood stable of cameras & lenses. I am surprised you are getting rid of the Nikon d500 with its assortment of lenses. I have the d7500 ( junior version of the d500) & am really happy with it.if I could fit it into my limited budget would get a d500 to go with it. Maybe someday. But, if you can afford the newer Sony, go for it…

Buy the Nikon Z8 and use all of your current lenses with an adapter until you decide to convert to Z lenses.

Excellent article in Saturday's WSJ by sportswriter Jason Gay that relates to GAS discussions. Article was about sports gear but relates. Said he was a gearaholic; I thought I was one buy away from greatness; it took me years to realize that I was the technology that mattered, and my tech is flawed. Having said all this, even though I own a Sony A7Riv and a RX 100 VI, I may buy a Leica Q3. GAS attack and I'm encouraged that several Hoggers were non judgmental recently and encouraged the op. If you can afford it go for it.
