my cat ran away last night, found it on a lamp cord.it might be time to do something
Sorry for the late reply! So it's wandering? They will wander for days, so presumably no harm. Here is what you can do. They want to burrow under ground to pupate.
1. Get a bucket, and put the cat in the bucket. Put that in a cool dark place (presumably the basement, or bathroom).
2. Let it wander all it wants, round and round. As it does so it will gradually shrink dramatically. This will take days. Check on it every day, though. Meanwhile ...
3. Prepare a 'graveyard'. A small plastic container of moist earth, several inches deep.
4. When the cat is immobile, it will have shrunken dramatically.
5. Dig a 'grave' in the dirt, a few inches deep. Be sure there is packed dirt at the bottom and around the sides. Put the cat in, and cover it with loose dirt. Don't tamp it down. Leave it alone. If it's completely immobile now, it won't b e able to crawl out. This makes a good chamber and it should pupate well. Keep the dirt pleasantly moist.
6. It will remain, unable to crawl out. Over at least a week, maybe two, it will pupate. It takes time.
7. After a few weeks you may carefully excavate to see how it turned out. Hopefully a smooth pupa, the size of your thumb, without legs or wings sticking out. That is a 'good' pupa.
Not sure when this will hatch down there in Texas, but you presumably get two generations so it would emerge later this summer. We should check.
UPDATE: Let's review things in order to be sure we are on the right page.
The cat should have changed from a yellow cat --> a green cat, then then grew to a BIG GREEN MONSTER CAT, right? And this big green monster cat wants to EAT. A LOT. That should be happening. Give food regularly when they are like that. They don't want to run out.
Then, when it's starting to want to pupate, they begin to wander. But sometimes they change their mind, and go back to eating for a day or two. It's sort of off and on at first.
But when the cat is committed to pupating, it wanders, and stays wandering. A sure sign of this is if it's turned a lovely blue color. Here is a handful of monster cats from many years ago. They are all ANGRY AS HELL about being in my hand, but the blue ones would be wandering.
If that is the case, then go to the bucket protocol that I had posted earlier. That is certainly not the natural way to do it, but I'd found that letting them burrow naturally into a bucket of dirt resulted in a fair % of them not pupating well, and that is fatal.
