The next time you put gasoline in your car and are shocked by the price per gallon, be thankful that you are not filling your tank with printer ink. That would be a real sticker shock.

And so I don't have a photo printer. I have a B&W laser printer for other stuff which is quite cheap in term of toner cost. Laser doesn't dry out like inkjet.

Gas station owners should post the price of ink/gallon at the pump.

Black printer ink: $2,700 per gallon.

Try a color laser printer!

Canon want well over $420 for a set of cartridges which don't last THAT long.

Aftermarket alternatives aren't as good - at least the ones I've been using - but cost around $110 a set.

The laser is great for documents, poor for photo prints though.

It cost me about $700 for a set of cartridges for my Canon Pro 1000. And I discovered that the printer use ink weather you are printing or not. I guess it's the way it keeps it self clean. I took a picture of the ink levels and maintenance cartridge before left on vacation. The maintenance cartridge went from 20% to 40% full.

I'm finding that the price of printer ink is becoming a factor at my place.

Why the great disparity between brand and independent. Is one really better?

I have gone to Epson Eco Tank models, come with bottles of ink, enough for up to two years of printing. No more expensive printer cartridges for me ever again. They have been such a success for Epson, that now HP has also jumped on the bandwagon with their own eco-tank style printers.

Cheers

I've been happy with LD inks. Much cheaper than OEM, and they often have sales.

I'm also a fan of LD. The debate regarding OEM vs. cheaper ink will go on forever. It's all about your personal experiences.

I have been dealing with L:D Ink for a great amount of time.
I use it in my Canon Pro 100 with absolutely no problems.
The ink Cartridges are guaranteed for life.
I've only had 1 problem so far with an ink cartridge that leaked inside the box in my drawer.
I called LD and they sent me another one at no charge.
I didn't even have to send the bad one back to them.

I'm more then satisfied.

I have been using Precision Color ink with my Canon Pixma Pro-10 for two years and have had good results. Savings are 50-66% of purchasing Canon OEM cartridges.

I don't print many photos, I farm them out.

Yes, when CVS is on sale
[every other week] I can get my work done for less than feeding my HP 7740.

Yes it's very dear, but it's actually cheaper than ink for the Prograf 300 per ml.

I was curious about total cost of printing. I picked HP just because I have a 9015 and 1600 pages because that's what the HP 9015 gets from an extra large (XL) cartridge. The cost difference was amazing.

I got tired of running out of ink cartridges and got an ecotank printer that can do 13x19–though I rarely do over 11x14s.

For small prints I don’t buy ink. I have a CanonSelphy which is a heat transfer process for 4x6 prints. Prints have Exceptional lifespan. Paper and matching transfer films are packaged together.

When Costco stopped their photo services I had B&H ship my son a Canon Selphy 1500 and materials for 108 prints. The price per print is about 34 cents, ( paper and ’ink’) or about what they were paying Shutterfly—and no shipping fees. He can continue to fill the baby album.
