Over the last 50-some years, I’ve started my July 4th holiday the same way. I enjoy breakfast in the U.S. Then I enjoy a cup of coffee. While sipping my coffee, I carefully read “The Declaration of Independence”.
I think about what it must have taken to inspire our founding fathers to write and send this document to the king. I also keep in mind that, unlike email, the response was not going to be, even reasonably, quick. One had months to think about that response.
Now, to enjoy living in this great republic and the bravery which is its foundation.

A wonderful way to start this day, Bob! Happy 4th.
I had never thought about having actually sent it to the King. Thanks for the insight and Happy 4th, my friend.
That's the way we should all celebrate this day, Bob.
I believe it was called the Letter Of Separation back then. Seen something on the local NY news yesterday. The people they had on were involved with some 4th O-July going-ons in Morristown & Perth Amboy, NJ said it was a letter of separation if I understood it correctly.

The Boston Globe publishes the DOI every 4th of July on their Op Ed page. I always enjoy reading it too.

Good tradition Bob. They were probably anticipating the first ship loaded with Red Coats.

It should be required reading every July 4th!
A wonderful tradition. It's too bad so many people today have forgotten (or never knew) what this country is all about.

Great tradition!!! Sometimes we forget how fortunate we are to be living in the USA. I hope we never forget this.
