This is a pasque flower captured on medium format transparency film nearly 30 years ago, using a 120 film holder attached to a 4x5 camera. Taken in the Loess Hills of western Iowa.

The lighting, the framing, and the focus are all very well executed, jackm! It really brings out subtle details in the color.

Did you use flash? There’s enough light in the background that if you did it must have been fill. Beautifully done, however you arrived there!

Thank you Jared. No flash, never tried flash with a 4x5 camera. I have 6x6 and 6x7 roll film holders for my 4x5 cameras and used them frequently back in the day. I can't remember which 4x5 it was but think it was a Super Graphic. I had it pretty much on the ground. The flower was located in a grassy area in Preparation Canyon. These flowers are less than a foot tall so one has to get the camera very low which is pretty tricky with a view camera but can be done. I was a lot more flexible back then. 😁

Jack, this image takes me back to my days as a kid in the loess hills of Monona county near Turin. The pasque flowers would appear very early in the spring when the sun began warming the high bare grassy ridges. Sadly many of these areas have been overtaken by red cedars. But when they were blooming, they wouldn't show up in any great profusion, but in little clumps and isolated flowers. We didn't pick them because they looked best where they already were. Get your hip taken care of. My brother still lives in Monona county and had his hip worked on. He was back to carrying corn and supplement to his feeder steers within a couple weeks and says it was one of the best things he has ever done.

Wow RodeoMan, you just described exactly the area and conditions in which this photo was taken, just a few miles south in Preparation Canyon. Thanks for commenting.
