You just don't get it!

Ken is having fun, got a picture published and got credit for a photo. Ken is excited about it. He got praise where he wasn't looking for any. There is no reason to pee on his parade! Let him enjoy his time in the limelight and start your own topic to talk about all the legal BS.

How disappointing and sad to see some of you respond with this kind of post. Neither Alan nor I were raining on Ken’s parade. In fact, we were being supportive and offering information to him (and to people like you, Bill_de, who obviously need it) — information that would help protect his rights as a photographer. That “legal BS” also would protect your rights, Bill_de, and those who agreed with you.

You know, UHH is supposed to be a place where we help one another by sharing and trading knowledge. I just “don’t get it” why doing so was so offensive.

Ok -- this is a little about photography.

I'll start by saying, I take pictures for my own pleasure. Am by no means a professional photographer. That being said, I am occasionally a photographer for social or political groups in which I am involved. Things like getting shots for a newsletter or a website, or making sure that someone who is being honored has a record.

So, it was with surprise and excitement when I opened my local newspaper a couple of days ago, and saw they had printed (and credited!!!) a picture I had taken of some local candidates for office. Nothing particularly special about the photo itself, but still, it's my first published photo.
Ok -- this is a little about photography. br br I... (show quote)

Felt great to be recognized didn’t it?

Congratulations, Ken! I definitely know the feeling. I, too am an amateur photographer who takes a lot of photos, and I've had several get published one way or another. I wasn't always asked for permission, but support the project so didn't mind. One of my photos of a bridge in Bratislava was published in a travel brochure--they did ask my permission, but no payment was offered. (I accepted.) And one of my photos has been immortalized in a stone monument at the USAF museum in Dayton, Ohio. I hadn't known it was being considered, but it was a great honor and I'm proud it is there.

Enjoy your time in the limelight. It's not always about money. And if your name is associated with the photo, that is even more rewarding. (Only 1 of my 3 published had attribution, but that's OK--the folks who care know whose photo it is.)
