oops. So do we. It seems neither term is right or wrong, just different ways of saying the same thing. Whatever we call it I think there should be TWO spaces between it and a CAPITAL letter to start the following sentence.

For some reason, people think it's necessary to make changes where making a change results in less precise communication.

Phone number: (209) 482-8516 - as opposed to 209.482.8516. The first string of numbers is obviously a phone number. The last string could be anything. That makes communication less precise.

Writing a software program used to be called "programming." Now, it's called "coding." If you work in the coding department of the military, I doubt you would be writing software. "Writing code" suggests you are writing a way to send a secret message, not programming a game.

There are lots of other examples, but I'm not going to list anymore. Although, I will comment on the unnecessary practice of swapping nouns for verbs, as in "quote" rather than "quotation," "mix" instead of "mixture," and many more.

Not really related is the practice of substituting "image" for photograph," which has twice as many letters and another syllable. "Photo" never really seemed to catch on as a "professional" term.

Your comment was a good read.

Using periods in phone numbers is common in other parts of the world.

And the creation of new verbs from nouns that were originally formed from verts. Like "Coronate" when "Crown" is the root verb. There are many examples of this process, using the derived verb from the noun form instead of the base original verb.

I still put two spaces after a period, but this site reduces it to one. My complaint is that most of these changes make communication less precise.

So do I. I was taught in typing class to double space after a sentence-ending period. It is the way to specify an "em space" instead of the "en space" used between words. I also use a double hyphen "--" to mean and em dash.

I'm with you. I've never heard the term "crooked number" and I have watched many baseball games.

I agree with you, and I always type 2 spaces there. If word processors and the applications routinely remove one of the spaces, they should also insert an em-space instead, which usually does not happen--they just remove a space and leave an en-space between the period (full stop) and the beginning of the next sentence. I also type 2 hyphens when I want a dash, and most applications do convert them into an em-dash.

"Period" is the name of the punctuation mark that brings a sentence to a full stop.
