Last year, a Painted bunting, a coastal bird, showed up in Dix park in Raleigh, creating news (an article in the News and Observer)! Nobody knew why it had traveled 100+ miles inland. It had no mate. The bird is back this year, as are the birders/photographers. Still no mate - which is sad!
I made 5 trips to Dix park investing a total of 10-15 hours looking for the P. Bunting, and used the opportunity to 'capture' other birds in the process. I finally hit pay dirt today when I was blessed with 4 separate sightings over 2 hours, 3 of them on a wood pile with the bird at eye level.
The colors are outstanding - as if it has just returned from participating in the Indian festival of Holi.
Comments and critiques welcome, as usual.
