I don't see any ethical problem here at all. She can get the camera and lenses from a great uncle's estate at a good price.

I guess the great uncle wasn't into mirrorless. Should she wait for another relative to die that was?

Why shouldn't she get it...
It's a tool.
All tools work differently.
She simply has to learn how to use it,
just like with any tool.......

(Most opinions will be based on personal perceptions & desires.
And still are a dime a dozen.)

Even if it is a good deal and a good camera, it may not be for her. Just let her heft it, (twice as heavy as her T100), and point out it doesn't have a built-in flash, (which may hinder her ability to get those dark, close-up news shots). My guess is, even if she did get it, she'd never use it as a news camera, as it would have more handicaps than advantages. If she is leaning toward a photography career, just be patient and look for mirrorless Canon deals, since she is already into a basic Canon system and needs to look toward future technology, not past.

A bargain price for a high end camera such as the D800 is a good choice for anyone who has some experience with cameras in general. Even if your niece doesn't use many of the features available right away, she can shoot in an automatic mode until she learns how to use the additional features. Since she has demonstrated an interest in photography, I suspect learning the use and capabilities of such a camera will give her a great deal of enjoyment.

She is young I believe. Weigh should not be an issue. But of course a lot of news now are shot with cell phones.

My niece may have an opportunity to acquire a used D800E from her late great uncle’s estate at a bargain price with some good lenses. She is a beginner but shoots mainly for a local newspaper. She does no post processing now but is planning to take a course. Would this be good for her or would it potentially just frustrate her? This question is mainly for Nikon users and I don’t know much about this camera other than what I read at the BH site. Right now she uses a CanonT100.

I started with a D200. I didn’t have any problems but there’s only one way to find out let her get it and try it out.
Since she is able to get it at a reasonable bargain price, she can’t go wrong. All she hast to do is try it and see how it works out.

The D800E is a very able camera and a beginner could use it effectively. I recommend buying one of the excellent books that describe its features so that she doesn’t become overwhelmed by its complexities.

I normally shoot my D850, but yesterday during a portrait session I picked up my D800E which now serves as my backup camera. I shot it for about a half hour and it was like putting on an old pair of comfy slippers. With a 105mm f2.8 on it, the image quality was really good.

I recommend going for it!!

Maybe she should just wait until the next generation camera after mirrorless.........
Not like she can't get a flash for it. My Ftb and AE-1 did not have a built in flash.

The D800E does have a built-in flash and in a pinch, it works quite well.

I’m not sure that photojournalism allows a lot of post processing.

I think back in the days of film many photojournalists didn't develop or made their own prints either. They often simply sent the unprocessed films back to the newspaper or magazine.

It will be fine for her. I highly suggest one of the books by Darrel Young or David Busch (How to use D800) very inexpensive from used book sites, as they would help her along on the journey.

It would be a great camera to not only learn on but it's capable of great images.

She is a reporter that shoots for her own stories.

Not sure where you got your info from, but the Nikon D800E does in fact have a built in flash. It is the exact same camera as the Nikon D800, but without the Anti-Aliasing filter. It will not "which may hinder her ability to get those dark, close-up news shots" in any way.

Check out this comparison by Ken Rockwell on the D800/D800E to see the differences between the two cameras.
