I’m downsizing and wanted to ask if there was value in saving the original boxes from lens and cameras?
If you sell lenses or bodies, many folks prefer to buy from sources where original boxes and manuals, etc are available with the equipment.
That said, in purchasing from KEH, the two lenses did not have original boxes. So it isn't absolutely critical to keep them.
I don't see why. But there are surely some folks who will disagree!
Depends......
Some people love and require them.
Not to me.
If I saved boxes for everything I'd need another house.

I just bought a new Sony a7RV from B&H.
I cleaned up the a99II that I had and put it the original box it came in with all the instructions and things it came with.
I got $1000 for it.
I was happy with it.

The benefit in having the original box and packaging for any device, whether a camera or something else, is that it provides the best protection if that device ever needs to be shipped, whether for repair or to a new owner. It is also the most convenient way to include ancillary items like chargers, batteries, cables, and manuals.
When I worked for an air express company, our gold standard for shipping fragile, high value items was the item in the original box and packaging, all in an outer box with 4 inches of packing material on each of the 6 sides. Anything less than that could encounter strong resistance if claims were made for damage in transit.
It REALLY depends upon the item... in some cases there is value in the boxes, in other cases there's not.
The box for my Leica IIIG is probably worth $100 or more. The box for my Canon EF-M 22mm lens is probably worthless, but still might increase the value of the lens if included with it when it's sold.
Do a search on eBay for "sold" items exactly like you're selling and see if there are any empty boxes being sold or items with boxes that have sold that can be compared with items that lack any box.
It might be silly, but items do tend to sell for more at auction when the box is included.
I wonder if the presence of the original box, case, whatever, doesn't indicate to some that the device was more prized by the current owner, thus taken better care of.

It definitely means it's going to cost you more money to ship an odd-sized box, to UPS & FedEx make the most benefit of all.

Your big cost when shipping with either of these guys is going to be for your declared value coverage if you decide to "insure" your shipment, not the transportation cost.

The value of a box is only gained from someone who really wants the box.
I'm going to use the device, not the box. DO I get a discount for not buying the box?
Well, I did keep ONE box, for the slide/negative scanner, ONLY to store it in as I hardly use it since I've done all my slides and negatives. Just makes it easier to keep it on the shelf.
I keep my stuff so long that no one wants it, or it breaks.

Since lots of camera equipment fits in a prepaid 2-day USPS priority box, sans the camera box that should have been trashed years ago, you can control the costs if you control the size of the shipment. Photographers buy equipment. Fools buy boxes.

Some people collect cats, I guess some collect boxes.
