I would recommend Canon's G1X Mk III. It has a shorter zoom, but has an APS-C sensor.

I will check it out. Thank you

…GoPro Hero 11…or the GoPro Max…they also allow you to select stills from your video…just a different approach maybe…?

Ditto on the Sony RX10 IV. Image quality is excellent and the lens is 24-600mm, so it covers literally anything you could possibly want to capture. A lot of people will warn you about the Sony menu system. It's just not that hard, at least I didn't think so. There are a LOT of menus, but you can create your own customized menu for the functions you use most and not have to plow through Sony's system once you learn the camera.

Hi all.. happy summer. I have a question. Can anyone recommend a good bridge camera to hike to base camp at Mt Everest with? It needs to be light but get good quality images. I have used a Panasonic Lumix previously and was not really impressed with the image quality. Maybe I am asking too much from a camera. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, K

I have and am very pleased with the Panasonic FZ2500 (similar to the FZ1000 Mark II). I am not sure which Panasonic you had before but, based on recommendations from other message boards from users who have used the camera extensively, I changed the Picture Control settings to Contrast +2, Sharpness +2, Noise Reduction -5, and Saturation 0 or +1. I save this as a Custom Setting and have found that photo sharpness and quality improved. You can always go back change the Picture Control settings to suit your needs or go back to the factory settings.

Any video from any camera can be used for stills. The (free) video viewer called VLC will pick stills from a clip. Lightroom Classic does it. If you shoot 4K clips, each frame is a 8 megapixel JPEG equivalent. That's plenty for an 8x10 and usually OK for a 13x19.

I did the trek in the days long before cell phones or great bridge cameras - December 1984. I walked in from Jiri and carried a Canon AE-1with two lenses and lots of film. If I were to do it now, I'd take the Sony RX 10 IV and or the Sony RX 100VII. I also would take my Samsung S22 Ultra which has an amazing camera, which combined with LR mobile would allow me to edit pictures as I go and send them.

What makes the trek difficult is the extreme altitude. So take your time and make sure you drink a lot to avoid altitude sickness. It is easy to not drink enough. Unless you are climbing Everest, there is little point of hiking to the base camp which is directly under the mountain, obsucuring any type of view. Instead you would be better off treking to Kala Patthar. It provides the most accessible closeup view of Everest, weather permitting of course. The altitude is a breath stopping 18,519 ft (5,644.5 m). Have a great trip

I replace my Canon "G" series with the Olympus Tough - pocket sized, very sturdy, underwater capable, great image quality . . .

Olympus Tough TG-6
The Olympus Tough TG-6 is a weatherized digital compact camera It differs from the Olympus Tough TG-5, by including new underwater modes, more macro photo options as well as a monitor with improved resolution. The TG-6 is technically very similar to the Olympus TG-4 and TG-5. The physical dimensions of the TG-4, TG-5 and the TG-6 are identical.

Maker:Olympus Corporation
Lens:4.5-18mm (35mm equivalent: 25-100mm)
F-numbers:f/2.0 wide - f/4.9 tele (35mm equivalent: f/11.1 wide - f/27.2 tele)

Usually recommended as the 'best' fixed lens 'bridge' camera is the Sony RX10IV. It weighs 2.4 pounds and is the most expensive of the 'bridge' cameras. It uses a sensor larger than the others in the 'bridge' group.

Conclusion: there is unlikely one ‘best’. I keep myself in the Nikon family due to its operating system, its ergonomics, placement of dials, etc. So long as the camera has good glass, a good UV filter in front of the lens, a decent sized sensor and an operator who understands composition, light and shadow and who can keep the camera steady, you would need ‘x-ray vision’ to choose one camera over another. Great marketing and lots of BS keep us buying and buying.
