If I'm walking... I use a prime. Typically a 50mm f/1.4 with a spare ND and CPL.

Covers all the bases...nice and light.

When I had a Nikon d7200 I used a Nikkor 18-200 about 98 o/o of the time.

When I had a Nikon I switched from a Nikon 18 -200mm lens to a Sigma 18-50(?)mm fixed aperture lens. I love a fixed aperture lens and never missed the 18-200mm.

I'm looking for a good lens to use on my Nikon D7200 for general landscape and some sports. I have a AF-S Nikkor 70-200 1:4 G ED which I like for sports. But I find it too long for some of the landscape shooting I do and for team pictures. I'm thinking the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens might be the perfect lens. I want distant objects to be sharp as well as fairly close objects. I want it to have VR. I prefer to buy used since I can't really afford to pay thousands of dollars for a lens that I use as a hobby. But I want sharp images. Any ideas?

IF you are not married to Nikon, the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 shows best test results among this genre range and dovetails perfectly with 70-200 .....yes, I have and use one - it is very sharp.

I use a Nikon 18-300 (about 1/2 the length of a 70/200) that has V/R. Comes with V/R Usually found without an issue on mpb.com or keh.com. You can check Ken Rockwells site for an excellent non-biased report on this lens

When I had one of them, I used the 18-200mm lens most of the time.

I have a D7100 and a D7500. Depending on where I am going, my walking around lenses are either a Nikkor 18-105 or a Sigma 18-300. I travel with the Sigma. I find it is versatile and sharp. Both are relatively inexpensive and available used.

16-80 or 16-85. I had a 7200 for years and the 16-85 was always on the camera. I also had a 70-300 and a 10-24.

I recently bought the nikon 18-300, and I am very happy with it as a walk-around lens, focuses very close, nearly as close as a macro lens, the picture was taken with it, does well wit land scapes as well
PS.
I am NOT a pixel peeper

I had a 18-270mm lens back when I used Canon, but I had gone back to my combination of 18-55mm and 70-300mm before I went back to Pentax. Designers have to deal with compromises that often are noticeable without ‘peeping’, and usually I knew which focal length range I needed before I had mounted the lens.

Another vote for Nikon 16-85mm vr...I have a D7000 and alternate between it and 18-140mm vr. As an extra bonus I bought a Fringer adapter (Nikon to fujifilm x) and have full function of both lens with my Fuji x-t10 and Fuji x-t30...

18mm max aperture? I assume you mean minimum focal length. And as for that, people always think wide angle for landscapes. If the scene is so wide you need a lens that wide you’re much better off shooting multiple frames and stitching a panorama. Wide angle lenses are for interiors.

Yes, I meant focal length sorry. Thank you for pointing out my mistake.

I used a Nikor 18-300 for 3 years on a D7500 and u less I swapped it out for my Tamron G2 or Sigma 10-20 for really wide it pretty much lived on the body. A bit soft at the long end but still good.

You might want to look at Tamron's 18-400mm DX zoom lens. I've had mine since they came out and have gotten very good results with it on both my D7200 and D500. I really like it for family vacations where I don't want to be carrying and fiddling with lens changes. The versatility is unsurpassed, but I usually take along a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8 for those low light situations. The IQ is very good, but not at the same level as, say, a 70-200mm f/2.8. In discussions like this, most forget that there are much more important things to taking good photos than having the best quality glass and camera, which won't make them better photographers.

This sounds like me. I have the 18-400 and rage d7200 and d500. I have gotten really good photos. I also have the Nikon 18-300 and I use the tamron on my d500 and Nikon on my D7200

I am 75 and have no problem carrying all day
