Good, Entertaining Movie
Last night, I watched "The Day the Earth Stood Still." This was the 2008 version, though. I know right off that some of you will not like it for three reasons.
1. It's a remake.
2. The plot is slightly different.
3. It stars Keanu Reeves.
As I said above, it was entertaining, and the modification of the plot made it interesting. There was more going on than in the 1951 original. It was on Amazon Prime. I thought the ending was clever. If you have Prime, it won't cost you anything to take a look. I thought Keanu Reeves did a good job of portraying an alien visitor.
We watched Stillwater. Matt Damon looked like he'd bulked up for this one. Interesting story loosely based on the Amanda Knox case. Very loosely. Interesting twist at the end.

The remake of " The Day the Earth Stood Still " was alright, but it could have been so much more.

Actually, he had gained a lot of weight, and he had his agent look for a movie that required someone who had gained a lot of weight. (Kidding, of course)
Did you see that movie with Christian Bale for which he lost a huge amount of weight? I didn't recognize him at first.

I just watched "Air" last night -- good movie from Amazon. They are getting into everything! Someday America will have a name change -- we'll be Amazon the beautiful!
Always enjoy these discussions.
A movie we watched on Amazon a while back is The Outfit. It's been around a while but if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. It's about a simple tailor whose shop is used by gangsters. Quite suspenseful.
On Hulu you can check out Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood. It's a documentary about the man who was basically the "arranger" for the many gay actors, directors, and movie executives in Hollywood back in the late '40s and '50s. Not for everyone, maybe. Of course some are 'outed' now, but quite a few I did not know about. Quiet jaw dropping. But send the kids to bed, please.

I agree. It was different but I liked it. Both the original and the new one were good. I liked the robot from the first one better.

I started watching the original last night.

Many old Sci-Fi buffs feel that the remaking of the classic movies is sacrilegious.
This is also true on the many movie adaptations from books.
There have been numerous attempts to do a remake of 'Forbidden Planet', but none have come to fruition.
The remake of 'Psycho' left much to be desired.
Peter Jackson did an incredible job with Tolkien's books.
There is now way one could include all of the nuances from the novels.
There was talk of a follow on to 'Dark Crystal' that never happened.
I think the movie adaptation of 'I Robot' was well done.
Hopefully, we have seen the last of the 'Titanic' saga.
CGI has changed the industry and not necessarily for the better. There are few good story writers out there anymore. We will eventually run out of comic book characters to make movies about.
It may be a age issue as some of the younger generations don't get Black & White.
The remake is only decent if you are not familiar with the original from 1951. The first (with Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, lock Martin, and Sam Jaffe), is considered a top classic for a reason...
Klastu barada nikto. Some of the most memorable movie words besides "Live long and prosper," "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn," "Here's looking at you kid," and many more. One of my favorites, "I'm glad it was you."

Right, all great lines.
"I don't think we're in Kansas anymore", "Spock, Do Something!", "I'll have what she's having!"
Then there was the very subtle line from the Raiders of the Lost Ark, "Bad Dates".
I know there are more but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
"Klaatu barada nikto" This was a line that, at about 8 years old, me and every boy I knew memorized out of mortal fear because we knew it might save our life.
As good as the movie Lord of the Rings was, it was not better than the book. The same with the remake of the Mummy. The remake was good, but the original with Boris Karloff, which I belief was also a remake, was classic. The scenes where they did the mummification still stand out in my memory. Boris Karloff was the quintessential Mummy, and b&w made it even scarier. No whirlwind in color could stand up to it.
It's Klaatu barada nikto...
There is no actual translation. Klaatu is his name, but, while the other two words exist in many languages, none make sense in the context of the movie.
