Going the e-mail rounds.

A father said to his daughter “You have graduated with honors, here is a Jeep I bought many years ago. It is pretty old now. But before I give it to you, take it to the used car lot downtown and tell them I want to sell it and see how much they offer you for it.”
The daughter went to the used car lot, returned to her father and said, “They offered me $1,000 because they said it looks pretty worn out.”
The father said, now “Take it to the pawn shop.” The daughter went to the pawn shop, returned to her father and said,”The pawn shop offered only $100 because it is an old Jeep.”
The father asked his daughter to go to a Jeep club now and show them the Jeep. The daughter then took the Jeep to the club, returned and told her father,” Some people in the club offered $100,000 for it because “it's an iconic Jeep and sought by many collectors.”
Now the father said this to his daughter, “The right place values you the right way,” If you are not valued, do not be angry, it means you are in the wrong place. Those who know your value are those who appreciate you......Never stay in a place where no one sees your value.

I understand the parable but have never understood paying more than the useful value of anything. I don't care if Tom Cruise drove it to Saginaw Michigan. It's still worth $100.

You're not familiar with the Mustang Steve McQueen drove in Bullitt going for 3.7 million. Some things are just iconic.

You may value it at $100.A collector might value it at $100,000. There may or may not be a correlation between what it is valued at and its worth.

A $2.00 bottle of water is worthless to a man drowning in Lake Superior. To a man in Death Valley, it is priceless.

How do you know I'm not familiar with it? Iconic > worthy of veneration. Why is a beat-up old Mustang worthy of more than a visit to the junkyard? I didn't say idiocy does not reign supreme in the world.

Marilyn Monroe's dress that she wore to sing Happy Birthday to JFK is another example. Yeah, it's just a dress, but here's the thing. You don't have money, so you wouldn't put a premium on either the Bullitt car or Marilyn's dress. They wouldn't make your life better. There are people out there with lots of money who are able to collect special things and who iconic things do make their lives better. It's not the difference between regular items and these iconic items. It's the difference between you and the rich.

The pawn shop may not know but the used car lot knew that if they can get that junk car for $1000 they can get $100,000 for it. It's really there that you don't want to be. There are places that can't use your talent but there are places that can and know your talents but they just don't want to pay for it.
