My donation to the UHH stream. I did not take this pix. Just thought it so cute. The others are so darn cute. I don't know much about them, just that they are prickley. Sort of like a Porcupine, except Hedgehogs don't throw their spines, or do they?

I work in two animal hospitals and am working the emergency clinic now. Ironically we just had a hedgehog come in earlier with a mite problem. I touched him and he poked me because he did not know me. Yet the owner could homd him and not get stuck. They are so cute.

They can make them lay down softly when they're comfortable, but they can also stick them up, and will sometimes ball up and then pop like a ball bouncing, to try to scare you off with the quills. They don't come out - no barbs to catch in your skin. But they are sharp! Usually water will calm them right down - mine lower their quills as soon as they're wet. I don't know if I said - that's Ms. Hufflie on the left, Quillby (the baby) in the middle, and Mr. Pippin on the right. Pippin is 3, Hufflie is 2, and Quill is about a year.

Thank You Pentax and cbdigital. Would love to have one or two for pets. I have always had dogs, but this would be a wonder to me and my family.

Andy I never thought they are ugly, but wild ones don't have a wonderful reputation, such as digging up yards, etc. I am open to learning all about them now. As far as I know Calif. doesn't have Hedgehogs, in the wild, that is. At least I never heard of any.

New Zealand never had any hedgehogs until they were introduced here nor any land mammals except bats. Too bad the early settlers released so many new pests, it really screwed up the NZ ecosystem. However possums and hedgehogs are beautiful animals and perversely they are surviving better here than back where they came from. Mankind has really messed up the World, I hope my photographs make people appreciate wildlife and stops ecological vandalism.

Merry merry back at ya. By the way, I think Cinci is one of the best places to live. I spent about 33 years working in Cincinnati, from 1967 to 1970, and then 1972 to 2002. Last 30 were with Frederick Rauh & Company, employee owned, and then through a series of others after we sold to Great American Insurance Company, then Acordia, and finally Wells Fargo. Our family lived in Landen Farms (Strawberry Hill Section) in Warren County. Frederick Rauh & Company was on Central Pkwy, and last couple of owners found us moving into 3-floors of the Kroger Bldg. City has great sports teams, fine museums, great golfing and lots of other activities. Loved going to The Golden Lamb in Lebanon for Christmas Eve dinner.

Come back sometime (when the weather is a bit warmer) and visit some of the new parks - Washington Park up by Findlay Market (which is looking good its own self) and Smale Park between the stadiums... Fountain Square does free movies on a giant screen on Summer nights, along with concerts and other events. I've been here 6 years now, and I'm still finding out new and interesting things and places!
