This mockingbird was killing it with its high jinks 🙂

Dix park, Raleigh. June 6th, 2023.

The bird would sit on top of a tree, sing its heart out for a few minutes, then fly up in the air about 20 feet and come right back on the tree top and resume singing. Switch trees, repeat! If this routine was intended to attract a mate, it did not seem to work very well (it remained "single" for the hour that I observed and photographed it)!

Comments and critiques welcome.

While he may have been unsuccessful in his efforts, you certainly were not. Very nice set.

Lovely pics! Fantastic actually!

I grew up with these birds in the 40’s and 50’s …listening to them all night …every night in the Spring and Summer in Calif. we had to keep the windows open so any slight breeze could maybe cool us off as this was before AC in every home. Soon I grew to want them to shut up so I could sleep. Now at 80 I am awake in the middle of the night anyway but no Mockingbirds around here to keep me company! Talk about life being unfair! Lol…

Thank you for the feedback. I am always appreciative of birds that pose. I know that that was not his intent.

Thank you very much, Mustanger, for your feedback and story. I grew up in India, where my only exposure to mockingbirds was via Harper Lee's novel! Now in the US (close to 40 years), I see and hear a few mockingbirds in the backyard. But none of them put on a show like this one did.

Thank you, merrytexan, for your feedback. While I was disappointed at not getting a sighting of the Painted Bunting (Raleigh's current visiting bird with "rock star" status), this bird with its song and dance routine sure made the trip worthwhile.
