Looking for thoughts on an Amalfi Coast itinerary; 4-6 days
* April 2024
* Current thinking of train from Rome (via Naples) to Sorrento
* No plan to visit Naples; already visited.
* No intention to rent a car
* Thoughts on a good base including options other than Sorrento for visiting Positano, Capri & Ravello etc.
* Best travel options getting around the coast (buses, ferry, train etc.)
* Good locations for photography; including best coastal shots (inland and seaward) high above the towns; although accessibility look arduous.
Looking for thoughts on an Amalfi Coast itinerary;... (show quote)

Don't forget Amalfi. Take the local bus to climb high above the town. You will get some fantastic views. Get the train from Rome or wherever to Salerno. Closest to the Amalfi Coast. Also don't forget to take a Hydrofoil boat to Capri. You will get some wonderful shots of the coastline

Have taken three trips to the Amalfi Coast: One by car (will never do that again!), one by five masted schnooer, and one by bus . Was able walk out on a pier and get some wide shots of Amalfi area. Incredible shots of the coast from the boat. Lots of places to walk around on the bus trip. Bring comfortable shoes. Lots of photo opportunities; colorful shops.

Thank you

Are you indicating that Salerno is a good central option? If so, access to Amalfi, Capri & Sorrento is just as good as Sorrento being a central base for the coast?

It's just that Salerno is the closest rail point to Amalfi. Don't know much about the City itself but I believe there is not too much to see there. It could be a central point for Southern and Central Italy which is my favorite part of Italy.

Would not call it a good connection point for Sorrento. I believe Naples would be closer. It's just that the Hydrofoil from Amalfi to Capri has some fantastic views of the Amalfi coastline.

OK, I talked Mario into going back, at your request. You just have to pay for our plane fare to and fro and he's good with it. Here are a few shots I took of Amalfi from the tour boat ride. It was really worth it. I'm looking forward to returning thanks J. These are from 2018.

For something a little offbeat: you can get a ferry across Naples Bay to the Island of Procida and it's an excellent day trip.

https://www.visitprocida.com/en/

You can walk the length of the island in 90 minutes and there is a surprising amount to see.

Don't be afraid of driving in Amalfi, just take your time and let them go around you. If you have a car also worth seeing, south of Salerno is Paestrum.
