The Hawk is back

This hawk seems to have taken up residence on our street. He has visited our yard several times recently and I snapped this photo while he was sitting on a tomato stake. We think he is either a marsh hawk or juvenile redtail. Whatever he is, he is a sight to behold! Photo taken through a window overlooking the garden.

Canon T7i with an old 100/300 non-IS Canon zoom @300. handheld, full auto mode.

Re: FlMusicman: Great image. Proves that its the photographer and his choice of subject that counts. Davidb1789.

Lucky you! I agree, a Coopers Hawk. And a good shot too! If you have bird feeders you won't be seeing very many birds while he's around!

You are right - the other birds are scarce when he visits!

It's an easy mistake to make but this is definitely not a Coopers Hawk. The "checkerboard" pattern on the wing and the brown eye make this a Red-shouldered hawk. An adult (orange breasted) Coopers hawk would have a solid, slate gray upper wing and a ruby red eye.
