I recommend #1 because
- it is a view of the full animal
- it is semi-frontal (would have preferred the head facing more forward than upward)
- it seems to be letting out a call/bellow (which I interpret as saying "Hear me! I am here! Join me!"
I don't recommend the others for the following reasons:
#2 - It seems to be saying "Go away interloper! Leave me be!"
#3 - Is somewhat like #1, but for me, it seems to be on the move, as if agitated and therefore hints of what I get from #2.
#4 - Is a truncated view (which I never like) of the animal. The fact that it is looking over its own back at you is suggestive that something/someone has disturbed its peace and tranquility, leaving it in a state of high-alert/wariness which would always leave me unsettled after viewing the print.
Hope that helps.

Love your explanations! But
#1 he is bugling telling all the other bulls to keep their distance
#2 He is telling another bull that he is getting to close and the fight is on if the other bull gets any closer
#3 yes he is agitated because the other bull is getting to close
#4 he is looking over his shoulder at his cows making sure they are still close - he is not looking at me nor is he worried that I am there
I was far enough away with a 600mm lens...he didn't care about me at all. It was an amazing thing to watch and hear him during the rut.
Thank you for the clarification. Only "wildlife" contact I've ever had is with a mid-sized doxie (late first exposure to animals in my home) and a succession of black cats (5, all now gone). Too old to inflict the loss of their "human" on any other cats.
Sorry thet I'm late to the party. Amazing shots, Cindy. It is truly a sight to see and hear, isn't it.
I am partial to number one while the others are nice, one concern would be the antler tips being too close to the edge of the image. They may get cut off by a framing mat.
Limited to one, I would choose #1. It shows the all of the elk and antlers, without the distraction of the line of colored vegetation in #3.
