Online Calculation of roof "squares"

Anyone on UHH know of an online way to enter your home address ONLY, and get a roof diagram along with the number of "squares" that make up the roof? ... without entering personal information. And oh, BTW, a roof square is 10' x 10' or 100 Sq Ft.

When Googling, one can find a bazillion sites that say they will do a roof calculation, but most all of them are from a roofing company, that wants your name, address, phone, email as a potential lead. And then the spam and phone calls begin!

Yes, Junior Samples Used Cars was a great place to get a good deal. Call BR-549.

It’s simple. Determine your roof’s rise and run (usually expressed as a foot of run for x inches of rise) and use the Pythagorean formula to determine length of the hypotenuse. Determine the area your roof covers, i.e. your house’s square footage, including garage space and the area of the roof overhang and multiply that by the value obtained for the hypotenuse and divide the result by 100 to obtain the number of roofing squares. You might want to add 10% or so for waste and valley overlap if you don’t use valley flashing.

During a Light Construction course I took at a community college I used that method on a materials estimating problem and got pretty much the same answer as all the other students who were measuring all the roof planes length and width and calculating the square feet of roof area in that manner.

If it's a simple roof use A sq. + B sq = C sq. That's what the roofer is doing for their estimate. If you know the length and width of the house plus the pitch you can figure the square footage. Lets say your house is 35 feet long and 25 feet wide and the top of the roof line is in the middle of the 25 foot. If the pitch is 12 that means for every horizontal foot the roof goes up one foot. if the pitch is 6 the roof goes up 6 inches for every horizontal foot. So, half of 25 feet is 12 1/2" (150") and the pitch (rise) is 6. Then the height is 75". That gives you the length of two legs of a triangle (150 and 75) The hypotenuse is "C sq" (150 sq + 75 sq. = C sq). Times the answer by 2 to get the total square footahttps://www.uglyhedgehog.com/compose-post-screen?topicnum=775433&rpostnum=13939844#ge of the roof. An estimate of the pitch will get you close.

Google Earth, enter your address, zoom in on the roof in 2D and use the measure function, it on the left sidebar, draw a line around the roof and it will give you perimeter and area.

Hello tuatara, thanks for the lead. As you indicated, I went to Google Earth, entered my address, view 2D, and measured the perimeter, got the area as 3,367 sq. ft. As my roof has many hips and valleys, with medium slope, I used the factor of 1.2 as one site recommended.

The Math:
3,367 x 1.2 = 5,240 / 100 = approx 52 squares. Might not be 100% accurate, but it's close enough. Thanks.

Does anyone know of a website that one can plug in the home address, and then GPS will find the house, and do all the roof calculations?

Why do you need a roof calculator? Just do the math. You know how long your house is. You can measure the overhang distance. You know the width of the house. Use basic geometry for the long side of the right triangle to find the distance from the peak to the gutter. If it's not a simple roof break it into pieces and add them together. If you want I can figure it for you if you PM me a pic of the roof and the length and width of the house along with the length of the overhang. If it has gables and hips I can use the pic to calculate everything as long as you send me the dimensions I ask for.

Huh? I googled BR-549 and all it indicates is that it is a Rock Band. Nothing to do with Roof Squares!
