Using my DSLR less and less

It’s just as I feared. Since I got a decent iPhone I’m using my DSLR less and less. I’ve always been an inveterate snap shooter and the convenience of the iPhone makes me lazy and is limiting my creativity to what the iPhone can capture - which is a lot. The big advantage I have with my DSLR is using flash, indoor and out, on and off camera. iPhone tech isn’t there yet.

Smartphones can take amazing images, check out the IPPAwards. However, at this point they do have their limits. If you are fulfilling your photographic needs with your iPhone, enjoy and don't look back.

The iPhone has an editing program as well as different modes you can use it on such as portraits and lighting modes etc before and after taking the picture. Using the portrait mode on non portrait subjects has the effect of a very shallow depth of field for creative effects. I like to use it on flowers and dogs. Also the editing program has all the basic edits to remove shadows, lower highlights, vibrance, contrast and many more choices. Easy and quick to use. IF you haven't tried it give it a whirl.

My iPhone 13 has an LED “flash”; I’ve never used it, but I’m thinking it’s OK, the equal of any camera without a ‘soft box’ or a collection of off-camera flashes.

Use what makes you happy and suits your needs. I have yet to take a photo with my smart phone.

Very true I find myself almost never using DSLA, and I am an old newspaper photographer. It’s sad.

Maybe the "sad" and "lazy" folks just need an attitude readjustment? Whine, or challenge yourself with new or old equipment. Your choice.

I just posted a similar comment this morning about the amazing photography technology hiding in a smart phone.

I was woken up by the Moon shining in my face at 1:30am this morning. Rather than grab my Sony A7 III, lens and tripod for a quick shot of the scene I set my smart phone to Night mode and shot the scene. It's not the same image quality I would have obtained with the A7 III BUT it was sure a whole lot easier to capture!

Enjoy!

I really like what my phone can do.
But I prefer the ergonomics of my DSLR.

I am experienced with all those features. I’m getting hooked on how easy to take photos with an iPhone, always keeping in mind its limits. And that goes for every camera out there each has its limits.

And advantages and disadvantages as well.

Good for you! While a phone can be quite expensive these days but you would buy one any way regardless whether you use it for pictures. So that would save you a lot of bucks for the DSLR but then there won't be new DSLR's on the market for long so it's a moot point.

I think the phone is capable of very good images it's just the phone is hard to use as camera.
