Front yard.

Should have reduced shutter speed and set aperture smaller than f/5.6 on #2; the body would have been more in focus. The setting was prep for the bee to take flight, but I could not capture that.

Comments and critiques welcome.

I think you have provided your own self critique. I would like to suggest a couple things for you to consider. First, think about increasing ISO rather than reducing shutter too much because, it’s very easy to get motion blur with hand held macro. DOF with macro is limited and it’s unlikely you can get the entire insect in sharp focus at macro focus distances. It is one of the challenges of macro.

One thing about these bees, they have no pollen on their legs. The more desirable “bee shot” will include pollen balls on the bees legs.

Having said all that, please know that bees are difficult. I myself have hundreds of “flowers with bee” frames and a few I consider worth showing. These shots are technically good. The colors go well together, the background is nicely blurred, you did a great job framing and getting the shot, and the results are good. I like the 2nd photo. I like the sharpness of the bees eye and antenna, the grains of pollen on its head, and the catchlight in the bee’s eye. Print that one. ;). And keep up the good work :)

Haha. Thank you very much, Mike.
I'm OK about getting close to bees for photographic pursuits, but don't want to get my "man DNA" mixed up with a bee's. Remember what happened to Jeff Goldblum's character in 'The Fly'!
