If I could use it directly with my bank, I'd do it. I would have to use the cell phone app and a debit card. I have a debit card somewhere, but I'd have to find it. Also, Zelle wants total access to my phone.
I did a search on the Apple App Store and did not find a Zelle app independent of a bank's app. They’re a feature of the bank's app.

From Zelle:
But, even if you don't have Zelle® available through your bank or credit union, you can still use it! Simply download the Zelle® app in the App Store or Google Play and enroll an eligible Visa® or Mastercard® debit card. After you enroll, you can send and receive money with confidence to almost anyone you trust.
Edit: I found Zelle in the app store on my iPhone - it's not the top app listed when searching for Zelle though - had to scroll down a touch -
Venmo is there too...

I use it often. My bank has it, so I do it from the bank application on my phone. It sends money from the debit card account (checking account). I didn't use Zelle from a separate (standalone) application though

Thanks. I'll look for the debit card. When you send money, what is the target? My friend thought it was his cellphone number.

My Zelle is set up on my e-mail address. So is Paypal. So if someone sends via Zelle, it goes to your bank. If via Paypal, it goes to your Paypal account. Pretty smart, huh?

So, I would have to have his banking info? I think I'll just bring him cash when I visit in two weeks.

i used Zelle (hyped by my bank - PNC, and several others) the the process of getting scammed out of $200 by a fake You-Tube content creator (don't ask). I filed complaints with the bank, You-Tube and the state's attorney fraud dept, all to no avail. PNC said that the transaction was valid - went to a real e-mail - so they said they wouldn't refund any of the money and the SA said I didn't give them enough information even though it was several paragraphs overfilling a page. If I ever use it again it would be between immediate family members. Still upset with myself that I could be duped.
My bank of 40 plus years just started with Zelle. It looks good to me as I checked it due to this thread. I'm going to test the supposedly simple process by having my wife send some money to me. All is needed is the recipients email or phone number. And a willing spouse.

No. He sets it up with his bank. Sending via Zelle to his e-mail would automatically put it in his bank. All you know is his e-mail.
I went to my online bank account and clicked on the Zelle link. That asked for either the email or text number I wanted to use and then which account I wanted to assign transactions to. The recipient needs to so the same "registration" to facilitate sending or receiving funds.
Advised to use only with trusted friends and family.
There are no fees.
I recommend reading the Zelle info available through your bank to answer any questions regarding security and use.
Kids in college will love it.
I use it every month, through my bank, to pay my landscaper.
Zell has had many issues with people getting I’d theft check it out.

I have not used it. I have read some articles that cash apps can be easy pickings for scammers. Might be worth some deep research to check it out.
I was going to try using one of the cash apps a few months ago for a pet sitter. She asked to be paid in cash or by one of the cash apps. That is when I read about the scammers. I decided to pay in cash.
If I were going to use it, I would set it up in a way that would limit my losses if scammed or hacked.
I mailed him a check, so "the check is in the mail." : )
