I am saddened by this news, Pat, though I was expecting it for sure.
It looks like Jim started posting in October of 2011 on the Ugly Hedge Hog website. I started lurking on the website later in December that year. I started posting in February 2012 when I came across this particular thread where a young lady in Phoenix started this thread as a daily challenge to learn more about our cameras and all the different fine points about composition, etc. There was a group of ladies that suggested we all get together for group photo shoot. It was at the second such gathering in Portland, ME that I met this guy in person that I had developed a strong liking for through his posts and stories. I’m referring to the 2015 Photopalooza that Pat and some others hosted for us all. We had of course done a little kibitzing back and forth by emails, but meeting him was a great pleasure. Dee and I got to ride in a golf cart around an island with Jim and Huguette before a really nice lobster dinner in the evening. Of course, Jim Jumped right into the drivers seat (wouldn’t you know), and invited us to join them for the island circumnavigation. Jim enjoyed this group of photo enthusiasts very much and shared a lot of his life’s experiences with us all. Of course, being an old Navy salt I’m sure there were some that he kept to himself. Jim had referred to himself as a “near amature photographer,” and hoped to be elevated to “amature” status with all our help. He had a lot of fun with this hobby and I was entertained uniquely by many of his stories and posts that he shared with all of us.
The little time we spent together at that Photopalooza in Portland and the emails where he shared some of his writings with me gave me great respect for Mr. Jim Carsten. May he rest in peace and may his family live with favorite and great memories that I’m sure he left them with. I only wish I could give Huguette as warm and as tight a hug as she gave me when we departed the Portland gathering.
I borrowed a few of his photos for this tribute. As I said he had fun.
I hope you'll be able to send her mine too, sorry ... (
