Bill Me Later - Beware!

I used Bill Me Later when I bought my D3100, SB700 and now my D600. As long as you make regular payments and pay off before the deadline it is interest free.

I had the issue you are talking about Jerry with Best Buy Credit. Instead of applying your payment they average a percentage of the payment to each outstanding purchase. I know it is kind of "shady." But, it is interest free and if you don't pay close attention...."GOTCHA!"

The only way is to watch your purchase dates and figure the expiration date for each purchase and interest free term. That's how I do it.

My D600 is interest free if paid in 18 months from Bill Me Later/PayPal(the dealer set it up so I could avoid the taxes.) With the lenses and extras I bought it comes to about $166. a month. So I usually pay them $200. and I'm ahead of the game.

Thanks for the heads-up. I buy and sell on ebay and I was going to look into bill me later. I guess I'll forget about it.

Are you sure it wasn't interest free if payed-off within six months? If he goes over the six months then no deal, pay as usual.

Yes, that was the deal. The thing is, he bought several items, so when he made payments, how was that money applied? He emailed them saying he want it to go toward the first items he bought, but apparently, that didn't happen.

Well, it's his problem, but a lesson learned.

Thanks for the heads up. I have used Bill Me Later for the extra ebay bucks. Not to spend money I don't yet have. I try not to mix six month deals with the other stuff because I worry about it being applied wrong. When I first started using it, the options of how to apply payment were so confusing that I just paid it all off to start with a clean slate.

I have to give Sears credit for treating their card users right. A few years ago, we made a big purchase with 12 months interest free. Charged some smaller stuff and they applied our payments to the stuff not under the deal first so that we never paid any interest.

To Sarge - I love that deal, sending their apllications back in their prepaid envelopes! It doesnt stop them but at least the PO is making out. (they need all the help they can get).

I think the problem is that none of these plans work the way you "think" they work or what your sense of logic tells you. They instead work "exactly" like the contract reads. READ it BEFORE you hit the submit order button. If you don't understand what you read then either reject the offer or call them and have some one explain it until you understand what your signing up for.

I used to have a Bank of America card and a Chase card. I paid them off and cut them up. I love them paying postage on advertising and then I send them their paperwork back in the pre-paid envelope. Sometimes I put in other credit card company advertisement in with theirs.

I have used and like the Bill me later offer. You are told up front what the interest will be if not paid off within the six months, so nothing to complain about. Payments are applied on the total, not individual items or purchases added. I just put the money aside in my bank where it draws a little interest and pay off the Bill me later when due. Our credit cards work the same way, use their money and pay the balance in full each month.

If you use eBay, you've probably seen their push for Bill Me Later, now owned by eBay. They offer 6 months interest free, and after that charge interest. Stay away from this.

A friend bought several items using it, and after 6 months he was hit with $181 in interest. Although he sent them lots of money during that 6 month period, they didn't apply it to pay off any single item. He had tried to communicate with them to make sure the payments were applied to specific items, but he never got a response. I don't know what the interest rate is, but it must be way up there.

Noted! Thanks!!!!
It's a shame to see eBay doing something shady like this.

The only thing shady going on here is in your mind.
Read the contract BEFORE you go on a spending spree

If you were replying to me let me be clear. I was responding to someone else, saying Thanks and that the info was noted. I inadvertently picked up part of HIS post that talked about Ebay doing something shady. I don't know anything about Ebay, and would not make an assumption about its business practices.

Nor should YOU assume that I (an attorney) would not read a contract before entering into it, or that I went on a spending spree. Geez.
