Both Nikon and Canon provide programs to allow images to be transferred from the camera to a computer. Do other makes of cameras also provide such programs for their cameras? I am considering buying a used point and shoot other than Nikon or Canon and want to make sure of how I would transfor images from the camera to Pictures/Windows. I am not interested in modifying the images in any manner, just want to transfer them to my computer.

Why not just use Windows cut/paste? Quick and easy!

Use COPY/paste.

Cut/paste runs the risk of a glitch in the paste, after which the original file has been deleted from the source. Copy/paste leaves the original file on the source, and it can be deleted later, after confirmation that the paste was successful. Not quite as quick, but safer.

I have wireless apps from Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and DJI. They are wireless and that makes them slow.

The fastest, least confusing and easiest is to take the card out of the camera, put it in the computer and copy the files.

True but most also give you a cable to plug into your computer USB slot, just in case your computer doesn't have a slot. I have two cards, different sizes in my camera. I can use my PITA reader or simply use the cable to get to both and it's quite fast.

Quick and Easy???

Yes, if you want to lose all your images. The "best practice" would be COPY, not Cut, aka delete.

I have never used Nikon software to transfer images to my computers. Simple remove SD or XQD card from your camera and put into reader and stick into a USB slot. Click on file explorer and on your camera then Highlight the images you want to transfer to a predetermined folder in your computer. Done

Especially the original files are on the memory card. After the transfer is good just put the card back in the camera and do a format. I would still want to format the card in the camera even if the PC deleted all the files.

JD750,I am considering buying a used camera from either KEH or MPB. Neither of these sources can provide any information regarding what is required (i.e., cables, programs, etc.) to transfer images from the used cameras they sell to a computer.

Hmmm. Ok. Most cameras come with software or a manual with a link to the software. You can ask KEH, MPB if the software and manual are included in the sale. Alternately, go to the web site of the manufacturer of the camera you are interested in, see if they have the software available for free download. Most do.

There is most certainly a way to do it because a camera is not much use if you can't download the images. Many people don't want use the computer OS for that and thus the camera manufacturers always provide an alternate means. That usually involves a cord and software. Sometimes software and wireless (which is much slower).

Transfer directly from a camera necessitates either a USB port or wifi ability. Otherwise put card in computer.

Don't format the card until you have finished postprocessing all the images. That is the best test of whether the images were not corrupted during the transfer. I don't reformat my card until after postprocessing is done and everything is backed up.

Yes, every camera mfg has a program to download images from their camera.
They also allow for some manipulation of said images. Not all are great, but they all have them.
