I was driving up to check out a new restaurant when I passed an auto repair shop. Out in front was this brand-new-looking '58 Olds. These cars and the '58 Buicks had to be the nadir of General Motors styling follies, but who wouldn't want to have one of these parked in the drive today?

Yes, but only if it lost 2 doors. Generational abhorrence I suppose.

I had one in a 2 door coupe. It had no power steering or power brakes and I took my driver's test in it when I was 16. It was a bear to parallel park!

I had a 60 Olds 98 convertible in back 1962 as a naval aviator, also a BIG TIME chick magnet. Those were the days.

Did the Buick Riviera ever come in a convertible?
1982 also saw the first-ever Riviera convertible, although relatively few were built, owing to a high price - US$23,944 ($67,233 in 2021 dollars). The Riviera convertible was available in only two color choices-white or red firemist with the only interior color of red leather.

This was not mine, but I found it on www

Spent a lot of time in a pink one black interior, a hard top, no post, go like hell. Out ran state patrol one night back in the '60s. Had to duck into a drive in movie and play tag in there until I got to the exit before he did. Easy to see him with his big red gum balls. Lot of fun back in those days, just like the movies.

Sorry, but that is not a Riviera, it is either a LeSabre or Electra.

The Buick Riviera, as a separate model line, was introduced in 1963 as a two door hardtop only. I did not know that there was ever a convertible made.

Prior to the Riviera badge, Buick two-door hardtops were all called "Rivieras," as in "The 1952 Buick Special Riviera." To my knowledge, the word never appeared on a car.

Sorry, but those names started with the 1959 Buicks, The picture looks like a 1958 Roadmaster.

Spent a lot of time in a pink one black interior, ... (show quote)

I had three Buick hardtops (called "Rivieras") A '52 Special, a '57 Special, and later, a '57 Super. The first two I had as a teenager, and of course I took a lot of ribbing for driving "Daddy's car," but my father died at 57 never having owned a car. I later found a Buick car club to join. I took a lot of shit, but they sure liked the luxury of riding with me...

I too had a black 1958 Olds for a short while, it also had the J2 engine option which meant it had 3 2barrel carburetors. Lots of chrome inside and out. My dad used to say you had to shut the engine off at the gas pump to gain on it.

Not a Buick, but I had a 58 Pontiac GP with 3 duces. Might have been the same motor since both were from General Motors .

Mine didn't have three carbs, but had cover plates on the intake where they could be installed.

Nice shot. My family had a '57 in some kind of electric green that I thought was the best looking thing on the street. Then '58 came and my dad, who bought new cars at the drop of a hat, got a T-Bird and the Olds was gone. As it stood, I thought the '58 was kinda ugly in comparison to the '57. Just my kid opinion, but it stuck...it's *still* ugly, lolol...

I sure remember the hood ornament (not shown here)… shaped like an airplane. Hit me, on my little Cushman Eagle… hood ornament tore thru my shirt and hung under my pants/belt… and that is where I stopped. Still have pain in my left knee from that 1960 (approximately) accident.

Having owned two '57 Buicks and had a friend with a '57 Olds, I can't agree more. '58 was a good year for Chevy and Caddy, not so much for the others.

The Olds rocket, I presume...
