I was driving up to check out a new restaurant when I passed an auto repair shop. Out in front was this brand-new-looking '58 Olds. These cars and the '58 Buicks had to be the nadir of General Motors styling follies, but who wouldn't want to have one of these parked in the drive today?

I had a '58 Buick Riviera convertible - a real chick magnet.

I had one when I got married in 1966. It was black, and I think the engine was called the J-2. The shift lever was on the column with reverse at the bottom, if I remember correctly. It was a pretty comfortable car to ride in.

I had one in a 2 door coupe. It had no power steering or power brakes and I took my driver's test in it when I was 16. It was a bear to parallel park!

The Olds back in the 50s were status symbols. Big, roomy and powerhouses. The Olds 88 was some car back then.

I was a sophomore in high school in '58. This was the dream car then.

More chrome than you could shake a stick at. Is that one of those cars that you should have kept?

That one and a '52 MG TD, another girl-getter fun-buggy.

I regretted (many times) passing on a Mercedes 300 gullwing for $3,000! Fire job, for insurance. Rebuilt engine done at a Mercedes dealer. Ran great, but no interior including dashboard or paint on its aluminum body. Newly married, I had other priorities - we are still like newlyweds - I guess I chose well.

I too had a black 1958 Olds for a short while, it also had the J2 engine option which meant it had 3 2barrel carburetors. Lots of chrome inside and out. My dad used to say you had to shut the engine off at the gas pump to gain on it.

I generally don't like tons of chrome but in this case it works. Great photo of a really cool car

Did the Buick Riviera ever come in a convertible?
1982 also saw the first-ever Riviera convertible, although relatively few were built, owing to a high price - US$23,944 ($67,233 in 2021 dollars). The Riviera convertible was available in only two color choices-white or red firemist with the only interior color of red leather.
