What's the deal with getting eyeglasses? When I was wearing glasses, I'd walk into the store, get an exam, and pick up the glasses in a few days. My son wants new glasses, and it takes weeks to get an appointment. After that, it could take up to two weeks to get the glasses. Wal-Mart gave him the earliest appointment - a little over week after he called - but it could still take up to two weeks to get the glasses after that. He'll wait for the glasses and use the Rx to order glasses online with two-day delivery.
And another thing! The prices! The frames consist basically of three pieces of plastic - for $100 or more. The lenses are two pieces of plastic that are ground by a machine in seconds. They cost even more than the frames. The Daily News did a study of the eyeglass industry years ago, and they confirmed what everyone already knew: we're being grossly overcharged.
Since having my cataract surgery, I buy my glasses from The Dollar Tree for $1.25.

Jerry, I hear you, but Covid changed everything.

Not everything. My son still wears glasses.
Unfortunately, the worldwide effects of the pandemic go way beyond the millions of people it killed.
I watched a couple of videos about how TV series were filmed in 2021. Everyone was working under strict Covid protocols. The only time any masks came off was when the actors were being filmed.

My wife gets hers there too. They now have the magnifiers in sunglasses, just to let you know.

Add “supply chain issues” to those excuses.
Stan
I read an article a few years back about how most of the 'chain' eyeglass stores are owned by one company. That may have changed a bit since then, with some new online sources.
My wife just got her a new pair a month ago at a cost of $850. Hearing aids and eyeglasses are the biggest rip-off ever.
Costco has been deemed the best place to get glasses by more than one survey. They may not be much quicker but are much cheaper.
We get our glasses at Costco. A whole lot cheaper, name brand frames too. Get the exam (every other year if that) and take the prescription to Costco. Save hundreds. Well, you might not save a dime, she now has glasses to go with every outfit!

There's a reason why eyeglass stores pop up everywhere. High profit margins on basically plastic.
COSTCO usually has a optometrist who rents from COSTCO and then you pick out your frames from COSTCO. I was able to get an exam within a week’s time and my glasses were delivered in a week.
Great exam and great service on the frames. You can get your glasses adjusted while you shop.
I highly recommend COSTCO for glasses.
Jerry, It is little known that the Italian company, LUXOTTICA controls the major portion of the world's eyeglasses. They not only own most of the popular brands but also own the large eyeglass companies where people buy them (Lens Crafter, Pearle Vision, Sun Glass Hut, Target Optical, etc, etc)....and...several eyewear insurance companies as well.
This is an expose of "60 Minutes" about the Italian company "Luxottica" and their monopoly of eyeglasses. Although it's a bit dated, it's well worth the time to watch.

It has going on since long before Covid!
