I grew up with 2-cent Coke bottles and shellac records.

our 45 year old son and his wife is like us and his 19 year old daughter who owns a paid for car and a house bought with money she earned is very ambiguous. Where as, my 40 year daughter and her husband are less like us.

Yep. But I only got 2 cents for a soda bottle.

Ditto, but every once in a while there were these "bigger" (IIRC green) bottles we'd could get a nickel for.

I also note that they didn't mention having a loose rope to start the lawnmower. My son in law with his new electric mower looked at me like I had 3 heads when I told him about the evolution of mower starting. I swear he didn't believe me over crank starting.

Amen. Fortunately today's kids and grandkids don't know what they're missing. It's us that want them to have what we had, but that can't be duplicated. They're as happy as we were...I hope. But, we had it the best!
In 1964 at 16 I was working at a First National grocery store in Ct. As a newbie I had to work the "bottle machine". We would take the individual bottles that were returned and place them into a little metal gondola attached to a belt that would transport them to the basement. Six packs were fine and easier to deal with, but it was sometimes hard to keep up with the large bottles. If there were a lot of bottles, say like on a Saturday morning, one just couldn't keep up. Reminiscent of the old "Lucy" episode where she was trying to keep up with the chocolates on the conveyer belt. Bottles were flying, broken glass everywhere...the only illumination was from a light bulb in a dark corner in the belly of the store. Believe it or not, it's bringing a smile to my face as I remember this. Oh, well.

Interestingly enough, though vinyl records are coming back. I read yesterday that in 2022 more vinyl was sold than CD's.

Nostalgia is great since you can leave out all the not-so-great stuff. Born in 1935, I was a depression baby who dreaded polio (now eradicated) and WWII was not a joy for an uncle who served in the 101st Airborne. Then, during college, there was the McCarthy era - not joyful if you lost your career for union activity (e.g., Pete Seeger) or were a tenured professor at, say, Berkeley, who was fired for free speech. Should I mention book banning during the 50s? Then, I suspect most African-Americans don’t have find memories of many things. All said, I personally have few complaints but I also don’t have a Panglossian view of the past.

Sure brings back happy memories.

Isn’t that true to an extent for each generation?

The big ones were 5 cents, but the little ones we picked up at construction sites were 2.

It’s deja vu all over again, ain’t it!

Yeah, Brian. But, unfortunately, we are also a generation who had almost no tolerance for people who were different from ourselves. Think of this. When you were growing up, did you have sleepovers with any kids of color? Or of other religions from your own? Did you know anyone who did? Did you play board-games or sit and watch TV with any gay kids? That's who we were ... you and I only have a few years between us ... and who many of us still are.

I wrote a book once, and in that book I had a line about nostalgia being a haze through which we filter out all the negative aspects of the past. But we were all young then, so all was good.
