I have been looking into upgrading my camera from my Nikon D5600 to a Nikon D7500. All six of my lenses are Nikon DX. I ran across an ad for a Nikon Z50 and reallized that this might be an opportunity to move up. I would have to buy a Nikon FTZ adapter though and that would add about $250 to the cost of the outfit but I would not have to buy all new lenses. Would there be any marked increase in the quality of an image from a Z50 versus those from a D7500 or even my present D5600?Trapper1
Lots of good advice given above and so I will simply ask a couple questions for you to consider.

What are your goals for “moving up”? What do you expect to get from “moving up”?

Which has more effect on image quality (IQ) glass or the camera body?

Everybody is right about IQ. There won’t be a discernible difference. That is NOT a reason to upgrade but there are several good reasons you might want to upgrade. And if you’re upgrading in 2023, unless you have an incredible deal, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to get another DSLR. Contrary to what others have said, your current lenses will work just as well on the Z50 with the adapter. Actually better because you’ll gain things like eye detection focus. The Z50 doesn’t have IBIS, but neither does the D7500 and your VR in the lenses will still work. And you’ll still get the other advantages of mirrorless, like “seeing” the exposure, much better manual focus, faster frame rates and more.

Trapper1!

Several months ago I bought a Nikon Z5 mirrorless body when Nikon was offering refurbished cameras and lenses on their website. As I've been using both full-frame and DX bodies since 2005, I thought that the under $1000 price would encourage me to try Mirrorless. One factor was the FTZ adapter and I was able to use all my current DSLR lenses. I bought 2 of them via eBay, paying half-price for one and even less for a second one. It seems there are a lot of them available as many were included originally with Z bodies when the cameras were being introduced and not being used by the owners. This might also encourage you to buy a Z50.

For me the Z5 is ideal: uses 2 way less expensive SD cards and the shutter needs much less pressure than a DSLR leading to less shakiness.

Be well! Ed

Image quality is not the reason to switch from SLR to EVF. If thaz your primary or sole concern, forget it.

Since you have the lens, it wouldn't be a bad idea to spring for the adapter, i have the FTZ adapter and they work quite well !

"MILC" Iz a sukkazz term.

"SLR" is a rather descriptive term.
Likewise "EVF" is descriptive, a term exactly parallel to "SLR".

"Mirrorless" is a 200% stoopid term, which esplains itz widespread use.

The Z9 is a new genre, "Shutterless", which parallels "Mirrorless".

Here is a pre-digital Shutterless SLR:

I have 4 DDLR’s; 2 d5xxx & 2 d7xxx series. One of them is the d7500 I pair an 18-300 lens (imho a great camera for the price with the same sensor as the d500 (some consider the king of dx cameras). I thought I wanted a Z camera, but budget would not allow it; so, I got a great deal on an 18-140 lens I put on my d5500 for a walk around setup for a lighter combo. Both combos serve me well for my purposes. A z50 would be smaller & lighter, but, I don’t think I would gain much for my purposes. But that’s just my thoughts.

Quality is at least as good based on my experience with a z6. Look for the ftz adapter used. Can probably get it for around $150.

You didn't mention what you enjoy shooting, if shooting wildlife go with the D500 faster frame rate.
