The Chicago Picasso sculpture is made of Cor-Ten steel. So is the exterior of the Daley center. I don’t know about the Daley center but the Picasso has never, to my knowledge, been treated. It was mentioned in all of the articles about it.

The Picasso does NOT "move". . .And, for the purpose intended, Picasso actually chose the Cor-Ten BECAUSE of the lovely shade of color that would occur in the metal over time!

I believe there is a steel out that is called "Coreten" (Pronounced Core- Ten) that is utilized in ship hulls. It is designed to rust and then protect from further degradation. I think the sculptor Richard Serra uses this material.

The latest in large transmission line posts is to treat the rusted poles to arrest the oxidation, this way the rust becomes the protective coating.

Some years ago I read that the breakfast cereal 'Wheaties' advertised that it was 'fortified with iron'. The way they did that was to put small iron filings in with the cereal.

I did not eat my Wheaties, so I never got the chance to investigate the veracity of that.

I use stainless steel for cooking, and I never get any stains in my food.

Ah! In that case, I hope I would have used " ".

I doubt that will continue production; too much negative publicity.

It's been in the news. They're restarting production, but in Montana.

Interesting. Maybe I'll watch it when it comes on TV.

The Core-Ten / weathering steel only functions properly if it isn't constantly, or even regularly, wet. You can't use it as sheet piling in water. On road bridges in Ohio it was required to paint the weathering steel near the abutments where the deck joints would typically leak. You can typically see a slightly different shade of brown for about 10 feet from the abutments where it is painted vs where the steel is weathering.
