When in Juneau, a visit to The Red Dog Saloon is a must. Great place.

The general message regarding your Alaska cruise is take your Nikon. I would say that two lenses ,a wide to medium one and a longer lens like I suggested a 70-300 both zoom lenses.. That should pretty well covers your camera needs except I would urge you to have a P&S to carry when you , take a look for a used pocket sized camera as a backup and one that will capture images that you had not expected to find. Don't over load yourself with camera gear, that is why I suggest two zoom lenses. If there is a need for stability in some situation, a mono pod would be my suggestion. A tripod might be strsdier, but could disrupt other camera toting travelers which will not win you any friends.

Have a great trip which will include Victoria and Seattle.

Remember that if you're like most of us, this is a trip of a lifetime and it will be better to have it and not need it that to need it and not have it. Buying stuff on the ship or at tourist stops will be expensive.

My thoughts exactly. Not inexpensive, but covers all the bases.

Yes, if I was told that I could take only one camera, I'd opt for something like what I bought my wife a few years back. She wanted something better than an iPhone (at the time she was using an iPhone 6) so I bought her a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V:

Of course, now she has an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and this camera sits in the closet (we've only taken 84 pictures with it), but if I was forced to take only one camera...

Take your camera and a long lens for shooting wildlife and glaciers from the ship. A lightweight tripod will be helpful with the long lens. Take a wide angle lens for all the scenery. A portrait lens for indoor shots inside the ship works for candids. A wide angle to long zoom lens works well, if you want to go a little lighter. Have fun and take a lot of photos.

In a few weeks, I am going to accomplish one of my “bucket list” desires. I am going to Alaska. Although cruising is not my ideal mode of travel, I am still looking forward to it. I am debating on whether to take my Nikon and lenses or just use my iPhone. Seems to me that I will not have much opportunity to take great photos….not sure. I guess I need to be convinced to haul that extra weight around. Thoughts are appreciated!

My wife and I went on an Alaskan cruise in 2011 that began in San Francisco, made selected stops in SE Alaska Juno, Ketchikan, Sitka and Haines (to name a few), Vancouver and Victoria, BC, returning to San Francisco. This was before I owned a DSLR. At that time I shot with a Panasonic Lumix Dmc camera with an effective zoom of 35-140mm. This morning I reviewed my photos. First of all, I wish now that I had shot with better lenses. About 55% of my shots were at 35mm suggesting I may have wanted an even wider lens. My second highest focal length was 140 mm (approx 10% of my photos). This also suggests I may have desired a longer focal length as well. Most of the 140mm shots were of wildlife. The other 35% of my photos were somewhat evenly distributed over the zoom range. Knowing what I know now, I would have had a better camera (along with a better photographer) a wider lens and possibly a longer lens. I am going on a cruise this summer and plan to bring a 14-30 mm f4 along with a zoom lens in the 24-200 range. If I returned to Alaska, I might also bring something like a 300 mm PF for whales and other wildlife on shore. Unfortunately, aside from hundreds of bald eagles, a few bears and a couple of whales and seals, we did not see as much wildlife as I thought we would see. I think it was unusual for that type of cruise. Otherwise, it was a fantastic trip. May you truly enjoy your journey there.

Easy question. Here’s an image that tells me that having a 20(?) year old Canon 70-200 lens was the right choice for me. Hundreds of other folks on the ship were taking many pix but I doubt I’d pick theirs over mine.

Take your Nikon and an all-around travel zoom, like the 18-300 or 28-300. I did an Alaska cruise and brought several lenses and only used the 28-300 on my Nikon D7100.

I agree with all the rest, take a wide lens and a zoom 300mm+! I had a Nikon D7000 that I took along the inside passage, 2014... on the ferries! Over the 18 day's, I took over 5,000 photo's! I practically LIVED on the outside decks(!)(well, not quite, but some people did camp out there!). From the time you leave port, and probably before, you will be amazed at the photo opportunities! Check out the lighting around sunset, almost midnight.
When in Juneau, if you can work it in, take the Tracy Arm tour!!! Much better than the whale tours (and you will most likely see whales on that trip, too!).You will wish for much more time in AK!
Take plenty of larger memory cards.
And start planning your NEXT trip to Alaska, and make it much longer!
In the search box above, enter: Alaska inside passage for a little taste.

Here is a sample of what the kind of images one might find on a cruise ship stop in Southeast Alaska. These images are from Wrangell.

What is even the point of owning the Nikon if you don’t take it on your ‘bucket list’ trip to Alaska. I am a cruise ship whale watching guide in Juneau. I can’t count the times guests have lamented leaving their ‘good’ camera at home or on the ship while whales, sea lions and Orcas swim around our boat and eagles fly overhead. Take the best you’ve got.
