One day it just stopped working i.e. When i tried to open a file after making edits, the working area of the screen turns solid white and starts flashing. I can't get any help from Adobe and user groups can't explain it.

Whenever I have had issues with Adobe products, I would start a chat and usually they offer to take over my computer and I sit back and watch. The only thing I need to do is occasionally I have to enter my password while they get the program up and running. They are great, and efficient, try doing this and your issues will go away.

Someone stated, " Layers not available on LR". I do not know if it is or not.

But I do know ON1 RAW 2023.1 has a fantastic AI layer features with a broad list selection.
Which just makes it easy to change almost any subject/object in a picture. Just Click twice and you able to open untold number of features and adjustments. Plus you can just go to layers in the edit module.
ON1 is Filter/Effects rich in making post processing fun. The editing screen layout just makes sense.

On1 has a very easy method to store your pictures and photos. Or you can just select frames from numerous input sources and be editing in seconds. There is no special steps for editing.

ON1 RAW 2023.1, really has made my life a joy to edit and create images to my liking. Then store them "my way"

layers in Lightroom is one Easy click to Photoshop, and one Easy click back

I wonder if it was always that way, or if some clever guy thought of a way to sell it but still let the company maintain ownership. Unfortunately, that's extending to all sorts of actual, physical items now. Want to fix your Ford or your John Deere? That might not be possible.

Licensing has been practiced for centuries.

Kings granted the higher nobility titles and estates, but they were revokable at the king's pleasure, so they were a form of license.

(and we still see examples of that sort of thing in the UK today).

If you were around in the early 1980s, you might recall Bill Gates’ decision to license MS-DOS, rather than sell it to IBM. That was brilliant!

I know I have never bought software I could legally sell to a third party without un-registering it with the copyright holder.

I shoot semi-pro football and ice hockey games too. Have done editing with LightRoom Classic and ran through 500-700 shots and down to about 150 by Sunday, and posted on the teams FB page.

No trouble with LR Classic, works fine all the time so far. Hope I didn't jinx myself.

He sold it to IBM. IBM has the full right to the DOS software but in the contract it allowed Microsoft to sell MS-DOS. IBM didn't think who would want DOS because IBM sold the computer with the copy of DOS. IBM didn't think anyone could clone IBM PC although they published all the information about it but they have the copyright of the BIOS code.
It was Compaq that could create an IBM compatible BIOS that doesn't violate the copyright law.

Meanwhile, how is the OP doing at resolving their issue and / or getting in contact with the 'real' Adobe support?

As many have mentioned: open a chat with Adobe. On their site - nobody else’s.
Do NOT just google ‘adobe problem’, or whatever you did, you will get a scammer every time. Adobe is very helpful - they want to keep your business.

And, to the poster who said ‘every year or two I paid $150 [or so] to update’ - at $10/month, you have frequent updates, along with tutorials - so you are basically paying the same price as before, just getting newer and latest software more often.

Then do it!!

Since it works well for millions, it might be your computer or you.

If not, the Lightroom Classic forum is here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic/ct-p/ct-lightroom-classic?page=1&sort=latest_replies&lang=all&tabid=all

Adobe tech support is here: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?rghtup=autoOpen

There is also a phone number for tech support.

When I go to the tech support sight, I am asked several questions and then the system asks for a $1 deposit and $55/month for support

You probably want to do something different:

1, Call the 800 number identified earlier.

alternatively

2, Access Adobe.com and sign-in using your Adobe credentials.
3. Access Help & Support
4, Click "Contact Us", force the virtual assistant to give you over to a human

Can you show us the URL that you accessed? Just curious, whether there are people pretending to be Adobe help sites. I tried to book a flight on Delta recently and used a website that I thought was Delta. Turned out to be a "pretend Delta site" and was actually a travel agent's site. One has to be very careful these days.
