Some years ago, I purchased a 28~300 Nikkor. I have been very pleased with the results I've gotten with this lens. It's now the lens of choice when coupling it with my Gigapan head.

Hello my UHH family,

I'm interested in an FX wide angle zoom for a nikon D500. I have a 28-300mm FX lens that I use on my full frame DSLR; however, I would like to have an FX version that would have a wider angle, possibly 14 or 18mm that I can use on my D500. The 28-300mm will work just fine but it makes the wide angle 42mm which makes it impossible in areas where I'm not able to physically move back far enough to get the shot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to stay with a Nikkor lens.

I know you are looking at a wide FX lens for your D500 without knowing your reasons. The 14-24 f2.8 is a lens I have never used but it has excellent reviews. If I had a D500 that is not the lens I would like to fit to my camera that has a much smaller sensor than FX.
Without knowing your reasons, as I said, why not using a DX lens with your D500? Those are lenses specifically made for the DX format covering the whole sensor.

I have an old Nikon 12-24 f4 AF-S that I use with my also old D7000. I can use it with my FX camera between 16 and 24mm and for me that is all the wide angles I will ever need. Nikon also has other options like the 10-20 f4.5-5.6 which is lighter, smaller and cheaper than the 12-24 f4.
The problem with FX lenses is that many times they are not wide enough for the DX format.

Okay first, thanks for responding to my question. Let me explain the reason for the post. I occasionally make trips to our wonderful zoo and I like to photograph some of the animals. Because so many of the animals are in very low lit areas, I take my full frame D4s which is outstanding in low light and I put my Nikkor 28-300mm lens because I have the best of both worlds without having to carry two lenses; however, when photographing the sea lions in action, I find that my burst capture rate is about 80%. My D500 has a burst capture rate upwards of 95% or better and I thought that if I could find an FX lens that was 14 to 18mm on the wide angle end and 300 to 400 on the long end, I could use that on my D500.

I am surprised that no one has yet mentioned the Nikon 16-35 f4G lens. I love mine on my D850 (FX). It is very sharp with good image quality and on a DX camera, would give you 24-52 mm zoom, plus you can also use it as intended on an FX body. For shooting on a DX body exclusively, I would use a dedicated DX lens like the 10-24 f 3.5-4.5 which is smaller and lighter but also very sharp.

I just wanted a longer zoom.

Yeah, I just wanted an FX instead of DX lens.

I use my D-500 in some extreme areas. One of my go to lenses is the 18-300. Light weight, ability to clearly focus withing a few inches of the camera. I favor this lens over the 28-300. The 18-300 is designed for the DX series as well. Attachment was taken with the 18-300 @ 300mm from about 1200 yards @ 1/8000, F/13 ISO 125

I might have to break down and get that lens though I really wanted an FX lens.

I have both the 14-24 2.8 and the 16-34 f4. While the 14-24 is faster and is a fantastic lens, I find myself taking the 16-34 more often. The one-stop is not a big deal and the 34 is nice to have on the higher end. The photo quality of the lenses is equal in my opinion. The 16-34 is lighter and will accept standard filters which the 14-24 will not. The price of the 16-34 is about half that of the 14-24 which is also a nice feature.

There's also an 18-300 zoom, but it's a DX lens...about 16.5:1 ratio. I've never used one. There were also 18-200 and 18-140 DX zooms. Not nearly as many superzooms for FX as for DX.

I'm finding that out. I think I will break down and get the 18-300 3.5-5.6 for my D500. I have a pretty hefty assortment of lenses as is but just wanted an all in one walk-around zoom to keep from carrying two lenses.

This is an addendum to my earlier post. I wanted to thank all of the responses to my previous post. I have decided to seriously look at the Nikkor 18-300mm 3.5-5.6 for my D500 and wanted to know if anyone has that lens and your thoughts.

None, it’s a versatile lens well suited as a “walk around lens” as I stated in my earlier post.

I keep an 18-200 on my DX nikon as my walk around lens. You can pick them up pretty cheep used. It's a good "do everything" lens. Not too heavy. Not too big. OK f-stop. Zoom range is ok. IQ is decent.

I had an 18-200 a while back. It was Ok, but not the sharpest lens. It did have a creep problem (hanging down, the lens moves to the long focal lengths). You can mitigate that by putting a rubber band on the lens so it touches both the static part of the lens and the focus ring. Keeps it from moving without some operator intervention. I eventually moved to FX.
