I am tentatively planning on going to Conowingo this coming Saturday (4/22), weather permitting. Last time I went not many eagles were present.

Does anyone have any idea about whether this Saturday will be felicitous?

Thanks

That’s the cool thing about wildlife. They don’t follow rules nor have a reliable calendar. One thing is for sure, you won’t see any if you don’t go!

Thanks Mike. The weather doesn't look very promising, so I probably won't go this weekend. But to some extent You can predict because the Eagles tend to gather when they open the floodgates on the dam. That's because the fish come through and are stunned and are easy prey.

Drove over the dam last Tue and saw several just floating about and down on the exposed rocks.
Wasn't shooting but looked like plenty of action.'

It is rather late for seeing many eagles. Normal high season is mid December through early March. Either end of those months the eagles tend to find food in other environments and their presence ranges from a few to none at all.

I visit the dam last year at date you are planning on going. There was plenty of action,I was told it was because the shad were running. This time of the year is unpredictable.Take a chance and go, nice place to spend the day and you will meet some great photographers.

Thank you. I have been there several times. It is always a good experience. If the eagles aren't plentiful, something else is.

Just an FYI. I think part of the Mason Dixon Trail adjacent to Fisherman's Park is closed because of the Avian Flu. At least it was a few days ago.

Climate change has really made a difference. With the eagles regular food sources not freezing over as much less eagles are going to Conowingo. The thing that brings them this time of year is the shad run. I’m not sure if they’re still running or not, (I’m guessing climate change could also affect the timing of the shad run. If it’s just eagles I want to see I see them all the time right around me on the Potomac and Occoquan rivers. There will always be some eagles there but, thing I hope for at Conowingo is shots of eagles catching fish, or at least fighting over them. If I could only know ahead of time that the light would be good and the wind would be blowing upstream and the floodgates on the near side would be open I’d make the 2+ hour trip more often.

I'd like to know those things, too.
