Would this lens be your lens of choice vs. ef 100-400 for a trip to Africa?

No. My choice would be my RF 100-500L. But if the EF 100-400 was the only other option, I'd definitely take the zoom. It's way more versatile. If you need more reach, bring along a 1.4X teleconverter, or a 2X if you've working with bright daylight.

The 100-400 would work best on an APSC R body - IMO

It depends greatly on where and how you will be traveling. I've had a great deal of use for long lenses on both of my trips there, but the same can be said for wide lenses. Small vehicles like Land Rovers get very close to some animals, but not all. Landscapes need wide or normal (50mm equiv) lenses. Watching a predator stalk prey requires that you stay well away from the active scene, or you will disrupt the predator's ability to survive - the prey will be on high alert, and the vehicle will cause him to flee; Most species in large herds and alone away from predators are very tolerant of close observers. Birds need long lenses.
If you're in the back of a truck or a large vehicle with lots of others, a wide zoom is the only realistic choice. In a smaller vehicle with few occupants, I'd opt for two cameras, one with Avery long prime, and the other with a shorter zoom - and I'd still carry a 1.4 converter, and highly stabilized equipment.

I would rent a 150x600 lens if you do not want to buy one. The animals can be from rubbing against the jeep to 100 yards away or more. You can use your cellphone also for video if real close. look on local FB marketplace for other equipment cheep.
Take some Microsoft towels to cover your equipment from the dust.
Enjoy

If it were me, I would buy, or rent if buying is out of reach, the RF 100-500. No doubt about it. Also, I would not limit myself to a long zoom, but also try to take something like the RF 70-200 (probably f4 for weight) and a general wide angle angle like a 15-35 or 14-35. If buying all ore any of these were out of budget, I would rent them. These three would give me a good trinity of focal ranges.

Methinks you are being a bit over-critical here. He's stating that the 100-400 would be best on an APSC camera, which infers to me he is saying it wouldn't be his choice for a full frame camera.

While the OP didn't mention an APSC camera he did mention the lens.

What will the OP be taking with him for a camera? Look no further than his previous most recent post...an R6 (full frame).

I will be taking my R and R6. The R is only for backup. If my R6 were to die and i had no backup; my trip would end.

Or, you could see all the things you would miss while looking through the camera's viewfinder.

A few members have been to Africa not long ago. You might contact them for advice. One of them is Beth (Photolady2014).
