The Beloved "STOP" Sign

I dislike "STOP" signs. I find them at just about every intersection. If no traffic is coming, why stop? If traffic is coming, stopping and having to restart will make me miss my chance to get onto the road. Combine that with cops who hide and look for wheels that roll a bit, and you wind up with a hated sign. I'm not saying they're worthless; I'm saying they're overused.
Originally, Stop signs were yellow because the red paint faded too quickly. It wasn't until 1954 that technology was able to produce a fade-resistant red paint, and red became the official color of these octagons.

The reason that they use stop signs is that people can't/don't think.

Right, and four-way stop signs are a good idea, but I always make sure the other guy is going to stop.

When you are approaching an intersection and someone else is approaching it from a different direction, always look for confirmation of turn signals. Turn signals are useful but they are subject to memory lapses combined with mechanical reset misses.
When I approach an intersection with my turn signal on and there's someone waiting there, I turn my wheels a bit to angle toward the turn when I'm still a bit away from the intersection. That gives confirmation of my signal and sometimes people pick up on it and sometimes they are looking the other way. Slowing down a bit is also useful as a confirmation.

Many people call the traffic there "An Organized Chaos" and if there were stop sign there it would be meaningless.

I've seen videos of traffic in other countries. I guess you have to grow up with it to drive there.

Grow up with it helps but you need time to get used to it. The idea isn't so much about right of way but rather let each other get by. If you have the right of way but someone in your way you let him go. Do things slowly so others know what you want to do and can react to it.

One of the reasons for so many car crashes in China is the fact that few people grew up riding in cars. It's a new experience for many of them.

Wife got T-boned a few years ago because a teenaged driver ran a stop sign moving at a pretty good clip. Both cars were totaled. My wife overheard her say that she thought it was a four way stop so she didn't need to because the other car would. Only she had the stop sign, my wife was on the main street. Teenage logic, gotta love it!
